A-League's Best and Worst: Newcastle Jets CEO joins the fun while Mariners reach new low

Lawrie McKinna embraced his inner fan on Saturday night and it summed up the CEO's infectious spirit this season

In a world where CEOs are defined by a suit, a tie and a general lack of personality; Newcastle Jets CEO Lawrie McKinna is a breath of very fresh air.

Not only has McKinna turned the club around with a shrewd coaching appointment, proper fan engagement and financial flexibility, but the Scotsman sets himself apart by embracing the fact he is a fan.

Seeing a CEO in the stands with a beer in his hand on Saturday night against Central Coast Mariners was a sight to behold and it's actions like that which have made McKinna a firm fan favourite.

With Ernie Merrick his usual serious self, McKinna is the perfect off-field compliment to the coach and has made himself the perfect figurehead of sorts for a club on the rise once again.

McKinna's night to remember was one to forget for the Mariners, who he was incidentally the inaugral coach of until being replaced by Graham Arnold in 2010.

Needing just a draw to avoid the wooden spoon and with new coach Mike Mulvey watching on, the Mariners put in a shambolic performance as they were whipped 8-2 by the Jets.

Unlike Newcastle, the Central Coast haven't put the proper investment into their squad and it showed big time on Saturday night.

The players themselves seemed surprisingly disinterested in a match that could well decide their futures at the club.

And it was a particularly disappointing way for the career of Josh Rose to end who has been a key part of the Mariners through the good and bad times over the years.

One thing's for sure, Mulvey will have plenty of work to do during the off season to turn this club around.
