Central Coast Mariners midfielder Mario Shabow has shown his support for controversial sacked rugby star Israel Folau - before deleting the evidence from social media.

The 20-year-old posted a picture of Folau along with the caption, '#standwithFolau' - a message to support the former NSW Waratah player's contentious views.

Folau had his contract terminated by Rugby Australia after making a controversial Instagram post on Wednesday that said "hell awaits" for homosexuals.

Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp said Shabow removed the post prior to his management being contacted about the issue and moved to distance the club from Folau.

"We’ve spoken to (Shabow’s) management and by the time we’d spoken to people he had taken it down of his own accord," Mielekamp told the Gosford Express Advocate.

"(Folau) is a big topic at the moment but not one this club has cause to be involved in."

Shabow has made 10 appearances for the Mariners this season after joining the club from Newcastle Jets - scoring one goal in his 299 minutes.

He began his career at Western Sydney Wanderers in 2015 and played twice for the senior team before moving on to the Jets, where he managed seven matches.
