Taylor Regan axed by Newcastle Jets

The home-grown defender will not be part of the extensive rebuild required under Phil Stubbins during the off-season as he headlines the latest wave of player departures

The Newcastle Jets have released Taylor Regan, Sam Gallagher and John Solari, while offering only a youth deal to Nick Cowburn.

According to a statement released by the club on Tuesday, Allan Welsh and Travis Cooper will not be offered new deals 'at this point'.

"Today the coaching staff had to deliver some tough decisions to some great people," head coach Phil Stubbins said in the statement.

"We certainly wish each of the guys that are leaving the club the very best in their respective futures."

The 2014-15 A-League campaign, the first in charge of the club for Stubbins, proved to be a season of turmoil for the Hunter Stadium outfit, with a revolt by senior players in January prompting a major clear out.

Kew Jaliens, Joel Griffiths, Adrian Madaschi, Billy Celeski and David Carney were all shown the door, joined by coaches Clayton Zane, Neil Young and Andrew Packer. Michael Bridges, a fan favourite as a player who retired at the end of 2013-14, walked away from his youth team role following the cull.

Andrew Hoole, one of the club's best players this season, has announced his intention not to sign a new contract and will join Sydney FC for 2015-16, while goalkeeper Mark Birighitti left to play for Serie B side AS Varese on loan in January. Veteran Zenon Caravella, out of contract at the end of the campaign, has been told by the club he will not be retained.

Jonny Steele, Marcos Flores, Sam Gallaway and Jeronimo Neumann were also allowed to walk away from Hunter Stadium mid-season.

Of the latest departures, Regan's exit may be among the most surprising, the 26-year-old local having captained the side as recently as February.
