Sheffield United v Brighton & Hove Albion Live Commentary, 25/4/21

1 - 0
D. McGoldrick (19)
Bramall Lane

United now prepare to face Tottenham next week with renewed confidence. Brighton will look to redeem themselves against Leeds United who are equally easy on the eye. That's all for now. Goodbye!
United stay bottom of the Premier League with 17 points. It's been a bruising season for them and they'll take the highs wherever they can. Brighton stay 16th, seven points above Fulham with a far superior goal difference and five games left to play. This defeat is a bloody nose for them but probably nothing more.
United regain some pride following their relegation, picking up just their fifth Premier League win of the season thanks to McGoldrick's opportunistic first-half strike. Their attacking quality may have dropped this season but they've never lost their work ethic. Brighton did their best to recover in the second half, only for Maupay to blow a gilt-edged chance. Ultimately their profligacy cost them.
90' + 4' Veltman's ball into the box from deep is cleared. Brighton try to create an opportunity one last time but can't and the final whistle blows!
90' + 2' Ramsdale is unable to hold Jahanbakhsh's deflected cross and hands Brighton a corner. Sanchez comes forward for it. United clear the initial delivery and Ramsdale snaffles the follow-up.
90' + 1' Jahanbakhsh whips a cross into the box and Bryan is the United player to meet it. United have gotten lucky here but they have defended admirably, as they have most of the season.
90' Brighton have four minutes to score. United have four minutes to hang on.
89' Jahanbakhsh overhits a cross and it bounces harmlessly out of play. It might even have been a wildly ambitious shot from a difficult angle. Brighton are running out of time. Maupay's miss earlier looks more costly by the second.
E. Stevens
Yellow Card
Sheffield United
88' Stevens struggles to hold back Jahanbakhsh down Brighton's right and resorts to tugging him over. A yellow card is the result.
86' Brighton are finding that equalising goal elusive. All their passing is front of United at the moment who have resorted to defending deep.
85' United complicate things unnecessarily near Brighton's box and Brighton counter with Izquierdo shooting from way out. It's a great hit and Ramsdale scrambles across to push it out for a corner.
83' Jahanbakhsh has added some directness to Brighton since coming on. The winger jinks towards goal before flashing an effort over the crossbar.
J. Izquierdo
L. Trossard
Brighton & Hove Albion
82' Brighton substitution. The Colombian winger Izquierdo comes on for Trossard. It's Izquierdo's first Premier League appearance since April 2019.
J. Lundstram
B. Osborn
Sheffield United
81' United substitution. Lundstram replaces the hardworking Osborn.
79' Jahanbakhsh rolls Trossard into the right of the box. The Belgian goes straight for goal from a tight angle and Ramsdale prevents it from going out for a corner.
78' Brighton are still pushing for an equaliser but the opportunities have briefly dried up. Jahanbakhsh takes a tumble in the box but to his credit doesn't appeal for a penalty.
G. Baldock
Yellow Card
Sheffield United
77' Baldock lands his name in the referee's book for wasting time over a throw-in. Fair enough.
75' United put some decent play together as Baldock gets forward on the underlap and cuts back for Bogle. Bogle's shot at Sanchez is tame though.
73' Brighton force their umpteenth corner of the game. United see it out. United are pretty clearly hanging on to what they have.
71' United play themselves into trouble, pressuring Ramsdale into making a rushed clearance. Brighton pounce on it and Jahanbakhsh beats his man to fire across the area. The Iranian's cross reaches Maupay who fires over from just a few yards out! That's a bad miss.
69' Brighton come close again to scoring as Maupay floats a lovely dipping cross towards the far post from just outside the area. Welbeck busts a gut to get on the end of it with Connolly in support but can't quite get it on target.
68' United get their first corner of the half off Veltman. Brighton handle it easily.
A. Jahanbakhsh
P. Groß
Brighton & Hove Albion
67' Gross also makes way for Jahanbakhsh. Brighton have replaced both their wing-backs now.
A. Connolly
J. Moder
Brighton & Hove Albion
67' Brighton are still chasing this game and respond with changes of their own. Connolly comes on for Moder who's not played badly.
66' Bissouma has another try from outside the box and is off-target. He's had 29 shots from range this season and scored once. That says it all really.
O. Burke
R. Brewster
Sheffield United
65' United make the game's first substitution. Burke will replace the peripheral Brewster up front.
63' Chance for United! Osborn gets down the left and finds McGoldrick who aims for the bottom right corner. Sanchez gets across to keep it out. United would be even worse in front of goal this season without McGoldrick.
61' Brighton have had six shots in the opening 15 minutes of this half, just one more than United have mustered all game. A Brighton equaliser would not be a surprise.
59' Brighton's goal may have not stood but their resolve remains strong. Gross finds Moder to the right of the box and Moder's shot is blocked. The ball comes back in and Lallana drifts into the area to head wide.
57' NO GOAL FOR BRIGHTON! On second viewing, Moder was well offside when Webster touched the ball. The goal's ruled out and it's the correct decision. Brighton still trail.
56' Moder seems to equalise for Brighton and it's no less than they deserve. Gross' corner finds Webster who gets his header comically wrong. Moder comes back into an onside position to hook it past Ramsdale! VAR is taking a look...
55' Lallana has Maupay to his right and feeds the Frenchman. Maupay smacks a shot against a defender, earning Brighton yet another corner. It comes in and McGoldrick heads out for another Brighton corner.
53' Brighton force another corner as Ramsdale tips Maupay's low rasping effort aside. It doesn't lead to much but the pressure is building on United.
52' Veltman wins a free-kick down Brighton's left as he's impeded by Brewster. Brighton are playing with greater purpose now.
50' Gross' latest corner is flicked on towards the far post by Welbeck but there's no Brighton player there. United get rid quickly.
48' Brighton resume their control of the game, earning a corner off Bryan. The visitors take it short to Trossard and get a second corner.
46' Brighton look to attack straight away as Lallana blasts an effort right down the middle at Ramsdale. Well, they've already equalled the number of shots they had on target in the first half.
45' We're underway again for the second half. No changes at half-time.
Brighton had 67 per cent possession in that first half but just one measly shot on target, Maupay's effort straight at Ramsdale. The visitors are finding United very hard to break down. United will be pleased with how that half went but Heckingbottom will warn his team against complacency. Their job isn't done yet.
That was about as good as you'd expect from two sides scrapping in the bottom quarter of the Premier League table. McGoldrick's opportunistic strike is the difference between these two teams at the break. Brighton have dominated possession but United have defended well since going ahead.
45' There'll be just one added minute in this first half as Maupay races down the left channel, fouling the defending Egan. Maupay gives the referee a few choice words about the decision.
44' Egan wins the header to clear Gross' latest corner. United have built a door out of Sheffield steel and Brighton are finding it firmly locked so far.
43' Gross plays a wonderful pass out wide to Trossard down the left. Trossard skips inside and lays off to Moder whose cross deflects out for a Brighton corner. That's better from Brighton.
41' Bissouma evades a sliding tackle and blazes over from distance. It wasn't the best decision by the Malian but he is bringing energy to Brighton's midfield.
40' Gross's corner comes in and Webster's header is blocked. Brighton will have another corner. Gross tries again and this time Osborn punts away.
38' Brewster gallops down the left and sends a cross high into the area, forcing Brighton to clear it. Brighton initially try to counter but realise it isn't on, so keep the ball for a while. Bissouma plays a one-two to wriggle into the box and Stevens pokes out for a corner.
36' Brighton try to work the ball through the middle but run straight into United's red, white and black wall. It's a very predictable outcome.
35' Fleck clips the heel of Maupay and Brighton gratefully accept the free-kick. Gross swings it into the penalty area and it lands straight to McGoldrick on the opposite side. McGoldrick clears.
34' Gross switches the play to Trossard who keeps Brighton ticking. Brighton aren't going anywhere fast though.
32' United knock the ball around for a while, trying to tempt Brighton forward. Brighton end up winning a throw-in down their right.
30' Brighton get rid of the free-kick fairly easily. They've had 64 per cent possession of the ball in this opening half hour.
28' Brighton look to counter down their right through Gross but the German's cross doesn't particularly threaten United. McGoldrick takes on Webster again down United's left and this time earns United a free-kick.
26' Stevens, one of United's best players last season, bursts down the left and forces Webster to concede a corner. Webster heads it away and Bogle cannons a shot straight at Brighton's defenders who have started pushing out.
D. McGoldrick
Yellow Card
Sheffield United
24' McGoldrick raises his boot to challenge Webster for a high ball, catching the Brighton defender. McGoldrick's shown the game's first yellow card.
22' Trossard is fouled by Norwood in United's half but Brighton achieve little with the free-kick. The visitors had plenty of the ball but don't have much to show for it so far.
20' McGoldrick extends his goalscoring record in the Premier League this season to seven goals, four more than any other United player. He's now scored 39 per cent of United's goals this season.
D. McGoldrick
Sheffield United
19' GOAL! SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-0 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION! McGoldrick gives United an early lead! Osborn gets down the left, firing in a decent cross. It causes confusion in Brighton's penalty area and McGoldrick is clinical, swivelling to fire the ball low into the Brighton net!
18' United see out Brighton's free-kick easily enough. The hosts break upfield and...
16' Trossard earns a free-kick down the right for Brighton as Stevens feels compelled to bring the Belgian down. Brighton will get the chance to send the ball into United's penalty area.
14' It's been a fairly even start to the game with neither side asserting their dominance yet. There's still plenty of time for that to happen though.
12' Chance for Brighton! Bissouma slides Maupay in down the right-hand channel and the Frenchman wriggles into the box, getting a shot away and forcing Ramsdale to make a smart save. Brighton get the game's first corner and United close down Bissouma's shot just inside the box.
10' Webster challenges McGoldrick and ends up giving away a foul. McGoldrick's United's top scorer this season with just six goals, which pretty much sums up their problem this season.
8' Trossard wins a free-kick as he's impeded by Baldock. Brighton are easing themselves gently into this game.
6' Brighton are starting to pass the ball around at the back. They're very easy on the eye if not always the most efficient. Veltman sends the ball forward hopefully. United clear their lines.
4' United have started positively. Brewster's closed down too eagerly by Veltman who fouls the young English striker.
2' United have their first pops at goal immediately as Brewster twists in the penalty area and has a shot blocked. The hosts keep possession to cross in from the right and Sanchez catches McGoldrick's looping header.
1' The referee blows his whistle and Brighton get this game underway!
The two teams are out on the Bramall Lane pitch. Both sides are in their home colours - Brighton in blue shirts and white shorts, United in red-and-white striped shirts and black shorts. Let's do this!
Heckingbottom has lost all four of his Premier League games in charge of United so far. The last manager to lose his first five in the Premier League was Scott Parker in April 2019 with Fulham. However, United do have a good record against Brighton historically, losing just one of their last 11 league meetings. Brighton haven't won here at Bramall Lane since January 2005.
Heckingbottom makes just the one change to the United team that lost to Wolves. Bogle replaces Ampadu. Baldock steps into the back three. Brighton make three changes from their draw with Chelsea. They're without the suspended White who picked up a red card in that game. Webster, Lallana and Moder come in.
SUBS: Aaron Connolly, Dan Burn, Jose Izquierdo, Alexis Mac Allister, Steven Alzate, Andi Zeqiri, Jason Steele, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Davy Propper.
BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION (3-4-1-2): Robert Sanchez; Adam Webster, Lewis Dunk (c), Joel Veltman; Pascal Gross, Adam Lallana, Yves Bissouma, Jakub Moder; Leandro Trossard; Neal Maupay, Danny Welbeck.
SUBS: Kyron Gordon, John Lundstram, Wes Foderingham, Oliver Burke, Zak Brunt, Ethan Ampadu, Phil Jagielka, Max Lowe, Lys Mousset.
SHEFFIELD UNITED (3-5-2): Aaron Ramsdale; George Baldock, John Egan (c), Kean Bryan; Jayden Bogle, Oliver Norwood, John Fleck, Ben Osborn, Enda Stevens; Rhian Brewster, David McGoldrick.
United's opponents here are Brighton who picked up a creditable 0-0 draw with a distracted Chelsea midweek. Graham Potter's 16th-placed side are almost safe from relegation now but have won just four of their 24 Premier League games against sides in the relegation zone. Now's a good time for them to start developing a more ruthless streak for next season.
Sheffield United's late 1-0 loss to Wolves last time out confirmed their relegation after months of languishing at the bottom of the table. With the pressure now off, Paul Heckingbottom's team might now be able to end their losing streak and start scoring goals. Aside from suffering 16 one-goal defeats, the most in a top-flight season since Ipswich Town in 1985-86, being the league's lowest scoring side with a measly 17 goals has been their downfall this season.
