Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Villa are next in action against Everton on the road next Saturday in their Premier League clash. Manchester United are next in action in the Premier League on Wednesday away against Brentford.
Aston Villa come from 2-0 down to secure a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in their Premier League clash at Villa Park. Bruno Fernandes capitalised on mistakes from Emiliano Martinez and Morgan Sanson to fire United into a comfortable lead. However, Jacob Ramsey began the comeback with a neat finish before he turned provider to allow Philippe Coutinho to rescue a point for Steven Gerrard's men on his debut. Villa edge themselves closer to safety in the Premier League, while United spurn a great opportunity to close ground on the top four.

The midfielder takes one touch before firing his second into the net from six yards. Can Villa snatch a late winner now?

D. Ings

70' As it stands the Red Devils are heading towards a famous landmark victory. United have won 299 Premier League away games, and would be the first side to reach 300 in the competition with victory here. No side has won more Premier League games (37) or away games (17) in the competition’s history than the Red Devils have against Aston Villa.
Philippe Coutinho
M. Sanson

61' CLOSE! United find space on the counter again down the right flank. Greenwood surges past Digne and fires a low strike across the face of goal that creeps past the post.

59' BLOCK! Greenwood drifts in from the right flank and he lines up a drive at goal, but his effort deflects off Mings and travels behind for a corner.

K. Hause
E. Konsa
Aston Villa
46' Konsa has been forced off at the break and is replaced by Hause.
It took time for Villa to find their rhythm in the contest, but once they clicked they were able to put pressure on the Red Devils. United had a bright start and have been a threat on the counter. It would be surprising if there were not more goals in this contest.
Manchester United hold a 1-0 lead over Aston Villa in their Premier League clash at Villa Park. An error from Emiliano Martinez handed the Red Devils the advantage as he allowed Bruno Fernandes' strike to travel through his body and into the net. Martinez atoned for his error to deny Mason Greenwood, while at the other end David de Gea was on point to make solid saves from efforts from Emiliano Buendia and Lucas Digne efforts.
45' + 5' HALF-TIME: ASTON VILLA 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED
45' + 4' Elanga tries to latch on to a cross from Telles, but he sees his strike deflected behind for a corner.

45' There will be three minutes of added time.
45' Konsa is down for the home side and in need of treatment on the pitch. Hause is going through his paces on the sideline.
44' Elanga displays his pace by skipping past Cash down the left flank, but Konsa gets across to block his lay-off into the middle.
43' SAVE! Cash sends a dangerous cross into the box that evades Ings but travels to Digne in the left-inside channel. The Frenchman powers a strike on the half-volley at goal, but De Gea holds firm with a fine stop on his line.
40' Cash brings down Elanga with a loose challenge, going through the back of the winger. He is fortunate to avoid a booking.
39' Buendia lays a pass back to Ings on the edge of the United box, but the forward leaves the opening for Douglas Luiz. The two players are not on the same page and it allows Fernandes to make the interception, who then falls over the legs of Douglas Luiz after the fact to win a free-kick.
38' Sanson angles ball over the top of the United defence on the right flank, but it just has too much pace for Cash to keep alive on the byline.
37' Villa have found life in their play and are beginning to apply pressure on the United backline.
36' DE GEA DENIES BUENDIA! Digne delivers a precise cross into the box from a corner on the right flank. Buendia makes a good run to the near post and powers a header at goal, but the United keeper produces a fine reaction stop to deny the midfielder before the visitors clear the danger.
33' SAVE! Greenwood does get a free on a United counter on this occasion as Fernandes picks out the run of the forward. He drills a low strike hard and low from the left-inside channel towards goal, but Martinez gets down to make a solid stop.
32' CHANCE! Cavani loses possession in the middle of the park and Buendia leads Villa forward. He feeds Watkins in the left-inside channel, only for the forward to send a tame effort into the hands of De Gea.
32' Fernandes tries to release Greenwood into space on a counter down the left flank, but Sanson slides in with a good challenge to break up the attack.
N. Matić
Yellow Card

28' SAVE AND WIDE! Telles angles a strike at goal with pace from the right flank that requires a good stop from Martinez. Greenwood latches on to the rebound with a strike from distance, which travels a whisker past the right post.
L. Digne
Yellow Card
Aston Villa

25' Villa are lacking rhythm in their play. The home fans are beginning to get a tad frustrated with their struggles.
23' Elanga runs at Cash down the left flank and he goes down under pressure as Sanson attempts to get back to help. The loose ball falls to Cavani, who clips his effort across the face of goal, but there's no one there to convert for the visitors.
20' Telles takes the resulting corner from the right flank, but can only whip his delivery straight into the hands of Martinez at the near post.
19' Cavani remains down for the Red Devils after colliding with Digne in the box. He requires further treatment off the field.
18' SAVE! Martinez atones for his error with a fine block to deny Greenwood. Telles whips a dangerous cross into the box from the left flank that Cavani tries to attack. He cannot connect in the middle, but the loose ball falls to Greenwood in the right-inside channel. He tries to get a strike away on the half-volley, but Martinez is out rapidly to divert it behind for a corner.
16' Since his Premier League debut in February 2020, only Mohamed Salah (45) and Harry Kane (34) have scored more goals than Fernandes (32), while only James Ward-Prowse (7) has scored more goals from outside the box than the Portuguese (6).
14' Villa have not settled into the contest. Gerrard's men have been off the pace from the off and need to find their footing to put the Red Devils under a semblance of pressure.
12' CHANCE! Fred floats a cross to the back post for Elanga to attack in the left-inside channel. He rises above Cash, but nods his effort wide of the left post. The winger should have put his effort back across the face of goal.
10' Buendia tries to bundle his way through the United defence, but he gets crowded out on the edge of the box before he can threaten.
8' United have been rewarded for a bright start to the game. The visitors took an early lead in the FA Cup tie and secured the win. Are they on course for another narrow victory?
Alex Telles

Goal

6' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!! FERNANDES SCORES THROUGH A MARTINEZ CLANGER!!!!! 1-0 UNITED!!!!!! Fernandes lines up a strike from distance that travels through the crowd of players in the box and then the grasp of Martinez on the line. Telles knocks a short pass to the Portuguese, who presses towards the edge of the Villa box. He fires a tame strike that travels past Cavani, but should present a simple save for Martinez. However, the Villa keeper fumbles it through his legs and allows the goal. A great start for United.
5' Sanson brings down Telles on the left flank and hands United a free-kick in the final third.
3' Elanga draws a foul from Cash down the left flank. Telles takes the resulting free-kick, but Konsa on the slide clears at the near post.

Aston Villa are winless in their last 22 home league games against Manchester United (D7 L15) since a 3-1 victory in August 1995. It’s the longest winless home run one side has had against another in English Football League history.
United are without Cristiano Ronaldo due to injury, while Luke Shaw and McTominay are suspended for the contest. Rangnick makes three changes to his side that beat Villa on Monday. Telles slots into left-back to replace Shaw, while Matic gets the nod in the middle of the park in place of McTominay. Sancho is still struggling for fitness so he starts on the bench. Elanga replaces Marcus Rashford in the final third, who misses out after suffering a dead leg.
Gerrard has made two changes to his side from their defeat on Monday. New signing Digne comes straight into the line-up to replace Targett at left-back, with the latter dropping to the bench. John McGinn is suspended and is replaced in the middle of the park by Sanson. Coutinho starts from the bench following his loan move from Barcelona.
MANCHESTER UNITED SUBS: Phil Jones, Harry Maguire, Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Tom Heaton, Jadon Sancho, Dean Henderson, Donny van de Beek.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1): David de Gea; Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane, Alex Telles; Fred, Nemanja Matic; Mason Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Elanga; Edinson Cavani.
ASTON VILLA SUBS: Matt Targett, Jed Steer, Ashley Young, Philippe Coutinho, Kaine Kessler, Kourtney Hause, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cameron Archer, Tim Iroegbunam.
ASTON VILLA (4-3-3): Emiliano Martinez; Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Lucas Digne; Morgan Sansone, Douglas Luiz, Jacob Ramsey; Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings, Emiliano Buendia.
United were not overly impressive in their victory on Monday, but managed to get the job done courtesy of Scott McTominay's strike. Ralf Rangnick is still struggling to get sound performances from his team since he replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but the Red Devils are getting solid results without style points. They do face a massive test tonight to find their form and bridge the gap to the top four after being outplayed by Villa even in their FA Cup win.
Villa meet United for a second time this week after being knocked out of the FA Cup by the Red Devils on Monday in a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford. Steven Gerrard's men played well in the contest and will have felt hard done by after seeing a goal chalked off by VAR. The Villans have been up and down under Gerrard since his arrival, and are currently on a run of back-to-back defeats in the Premier League. They face a challenge to stem the tide today, but there is a good chance to put firm distance between themselves and the relegation zone with a victory.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Aston Villa and Manchester United at Villa Park.
