Socceroos player ratings: Australians impress in World Cup opener

Socceroos 2018
The green and gold put in a brave performance against the French

France have claimed a fortunate 2-1 win over Australia in Kazan but the Socceroos can hold their heads high after a strong performance.

The French were frustrated by a resolute Australian outfit and relied on the VAR and goal-line technology to claim their goals.

For the Socceroos, skipper Mile Jedinak struck from the spot, while a number of others stepped up on the world's biggest stage.

Check out Goal's ratings for every Australian player below.

  1. Maty Ryan

    Maty Ryan

    Rating: 7/10

Resolute under a ton of pressure early and couldn't do anything about either goal.

  2. Josh Risdon

    Josh Risdon

    Rating: 5/10

Struggled early on against the likes of Dembele and was unfortunate to give away the penalty. Found his feet as the game went on and was a strong outlet moving forward.

  3. Mark Milligan

    Mark Milligan

    Rating: 7/10

Put two poor performances behind him with a strong showing at centre back. Read the game well and made a number of timely interceptions.

  4. Trent Sainsbury

    Trent Sainsbury

    Rating: 8/10

A standout performance from Sainsbury, who somehow denied the French clear chances on a number of occasions.

  5. Aziz Behich

    Aziz Behich

    Rating: 6/10

Was kept busy by France's wide men but never looked out of his depth.

  6. Aaron Mooy

    Aaron Mooy

    Rating: 8/10

Superb in midfield. Rarely put a pass wrong and when he did, more often than not won the ball back.

  7. Mile Jedinak

    Mile Jedinak

    Rating: 8/10

Converted the penalty with a captain's composure and provided good physicality in the midfield.

  8. Tom Rogic

    Tom Rogic

    Rating: 4/10

Never got going in midfield and was smothered whenever he got the ball. Was never going to be a game where he'd be able to show his undoubted quality.

  9. Mathew Leckie

    Mathew Leckie

    Rating: 6/10

Got an early yellow card which held him back somewhat and he wasn't able to make the right wing his own.

  10. Robbie Kruse

    Robbie Kruse

    Rating: 6/10

Put himself about well, winning a number of fouls in dangerous areas but didn't assert himself on the game.

  11. Andrew Nabbout

    Andrew Nabbout

    Rating: 5/10

A tireless 60 minute performance from Nabbout but he failed to make much of an impact.

  12. SUB - Tomi Juric

    SUB - Tomi Juric

    Rating: 6/10

Some good hold up play when he came on.

  13. SUB - Jackson Irvine

    SUB - Jackson Irvine

    Rating: 6/10

Got more involved than Rogic and used his body well to maintain possession.

  14. SUB - Daniel Arzani

    SUB - Daniel Arzani

    Rating: 6/10

Didn't get much time to shine but did surge forward past Paul Pogba with one of his few touches.
