The two Kenyan giants will face off in the biggest local derby, which could decide the destiny of the Kenyan Premier League title this season

A win for Gor Mahia against AFC Leopards will leave them needing three points to retain the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title.

Gor Mahia are at the top of the 18-team KPL table on 66 points, seven more than second-placed Sofapaka, who beat Tusker 3-1 at home on Friday.

The Mashemeji Derby has recently turned into a Gor Mahia feast, given the fact that AFC Leopards haven't beaten their rivals since 2016.

K’Ogalo have managed three consecutive wins against Ingwe in recent matches pitting the two most successful clubs on Kenyan soil.

In the last three matches, two in 2018 and one in 2019, all were won by the current league champions, who scored six goals in the process and conceded just one.

Will Gor Mahia manage to keep the winning trend going against their nemesis? Below Goal parades, the key players K’Ogalo will rely on to get the much-needed points.

Despite first-choice goalkeeper Boniface Oluoch returning from injury, Odhiambo is expected to start in goal against AFC Leopards. His agility and quick reflexes will be needed to ensure that he stops the hungry Ingwe strikers from hitting the back of the net. He will have to organise his defense well, especially outside the 18-yard area.
  2. Harun Shakava

Since taking over as the K’Ogalo captain in January last year, Shakava has not lost in any of the three games against AFC Leopards. The captain will want to keep the unbeaten record going and will have to lead from the back to ensure that they keep another clean sheet in the much-anticipated derby.

Since his arrival from Tusker, the Ugandan midfielder has endeared himself to the fans with his fine displays. Sunday will be his first Mashemeji derby and will want to leave a good impression. His main job will be to run the midfield and stop the opponents from playing their usual passing game.
  4. Samuel Onyango

The former Ulinzi Stars man has always had his best games when facing AFC Leopards and it will be even sweeter to help his team take another step closer to retaining the KPL title in front of the Ingwe fans. Onyango knows when to pass the ball, when to dribble and when to score, he has done it on numerous occasions.

The Rwandan striker still remains a threat whenever his team faces Ingwe. He is one of the best forwards in the Kenyan league so far this season and despite not scoring in the last two Mashemeji derbies, Tuyisenge will be expected to play a great role in helping his team remain on course to win the title again.
