The African country missed out on the chance of staging the biggest football tournament in their fifth attempt on Wednesday

Morocco have congratulated the United States of America, Canada and Mexico for winning the united bid to host the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

The north African nation lost votes by 134-65 at the 68th Fifa Congress in Moscow on Wednesday

The defeat at the polls meant Morocco have now lost five World Cup bids including 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010 attempts.

However, in a show of sportmanship, Morocco have wished the North American countries well as they prepare to host the world in eight years time.

"At the 68th Fifa Congress, member associations have voted in favour of the North American United bid, which will now organise the 2026 Fifa World Cup. Morocco 2026 congratulates United 2026 for their victory and we wish them well," the country tweeted via their official campaign account.

Meanwhile, President of Morocco Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa lauded Fifa for the credibility and transparency in Wednesday’s open voting system in Russia while restating his country's desire to vie for hosting rights of the biggest football festival another time.

“I wish to congratulate Fifa for the conduct of this process and congratulate the president for what he has done in order to move things towards more transparency and more inclusion,” Lekjaa was quoted by BBC Sport.

"I would like to reaffirm the determination of my country to continue to work for football and realise one day our dream to host the World Cup in Morocco."
