Was Avram Grant a failure with the Black Stars? Ghana fans deliver their verdict

Goal asked our readers whether the departed Black Stars coach deserves the criticism that’s come his way

In light of Avram Grant’s departure as Ghana boss, he was subjected to significant criticism from executive committee member Wilfred Osei , who labelled the Israeli coach a ‘failure’, but do Goal readers agree with this appraisal?

Indeed, there’s no doubt that the former Chelsea man’s stint with the Black Stars ended in disappointment, with a Nations Cup semi-final elimination at the hands of Cameroon, but does he deserve credit overall for his tenure?

Osei certainly didn’t think so, accusing Grant of approaching his brief in an uninspiring way and, tacitly, for not dedicating himself to his work.

However, the exec member failed to recall the two Afcon semi-finals that the former coach took Ghana too, or the final in 2015 when, only months after taking over, the Black Stars ran the eventual champions Cote d’Ivoire all the way to penalties.

Also, the 62-year-old had to contend with various injuries to top players, not least Asamoah Gyan, who suffered fitness and sickness concerns at both of Grant’s Afcons.

In light of Osei’s criticism, Goal asked our readers whether it was fair to consider the veteran a failure during his time with the Stars, or whether Grant deserves credit for some of his achievements.

Intriguingly, despite much of the animosity that’s been hurled the coach’s way in recent weeks, Goal readers were split about whether his tenure with the national side ought to be considered a failure.

54 percent of those who responded agreed with Osei labelling Grant a failure, while a significant minority of 46 percent revealed that they believed that the Israeli coach deserves better than Osei’s criticism.

Comment below and let us know whether you believe the 62-year-old’s two-year stay with the Black Stars will be remembered fondly, or whether it represents yet another missed opportunity for the Ghanaian national side.
