Melbourne City were tipped to dominate, but couldn't make the most of their fresh legs

Sydney FC have issued a strong warning about their A-League title credentials after easing past Melbourne City 3-0 at AAMI Park.

Despite playing their third game in just six days, the Sky Blues were intent on picking themselves up quickly after falling to Adelaide United 2-1 in the FFA Cup final on Tuesday.

Though City were keen to overwhelm them early, Sydney FC managed to make the most of their lesser possession and found the opener via Paulo Retre in the 16th minute.

The midfielder tapping the ball between the legs of Eugene Galekovic after Rhyan Grant was able to drill the ball across the face of goal.

Warren Joyce's men looked for an instant reply but were struggling for ideas in the final third.

Despite some fatigue, Steve Corica's side had no such issue and nearly went into the break 2-0 up after some neat passing between Milos Ninkovic and Adam Le Fondre saw the latter fire straight at Galekovic.

City emerged from the break with a bit more threat to their attack, but it would be Sydney that struck first as Le Fondre chipped the ball home in the 61st minute.

The English striker finding the back of the net in his third straight A-League game after being played through on goal by Retre.

A well-oiled Sydney side going on to keep a static City attack goalless as they showed they won't be throwing away any games easily this season.

The icing on the cake coming in the form of an injury-time strike to Le Fondre after a delightful back-heeled assist from Ninkovic which sealed a 3-0 scoreline for the Sky Blues.
