Akwa United head coach Abdul Maikaba says the quick implementation of Pep Guardiola's coaching philosophy has inspired his side's turnaround this season.
Despite facing a rough start to life at the Uyo based outfit, the tactician insists sticking to his coaching style has proved refreshing after a 1-0 win over Enyimba.
"We started badly at the beginning of the season. We were at some points at the bottom of the log and even went about six games without a win," Maikaba told Goal.
"We kept working hard and gradually we are moving up the ladder and getting to a continental position for the first time this season.
"My role model in modern day coaching is Pep Guardiola. I adopt his philosophy because I'm a coach who loves to borrow ideas from other coaches and clubs but my best type of football tactics is that of Barcelona under Guardiola.
"I like the philosophy. It allows freedom of movement among the players. They freely enjoy themselves on the field and have numerous exchange of short passes.
"For sure, my tactics are not working by accident. At the beginning, they find it difficult implementing but later you see the players cope and enjoy playing with it.
"I work hard to convince them to follow this philosophy and it has worked for us at the end. We look to sustain it and hope we finish as high.''
