A brace from Cristiano Ronaldo helped to inspire Real Madrid to their biggest victory over La Liga rivals Sevilla since the days of Diego Maradona.

The Blancos have faced criticism this season amid a struggle for goals, with an enviable array of attacking talent being kept uncharacteristically quiet.

Zinedine Zidane’s side were in ruthless mood, however, at Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

Real netted on five occasions before half-time to ease their way past Sevilla, with the Andalusian side suffering their heaviest reversal against the capital giants in 24 years.

Despite having Maradona and fellow Argentine Diego Simeone on their books, Sevilla had no answer to Real back in the 1992-93 campaign.

History has now repeated itself, with the Blancos edging back towards arch-rivals Barcelona at the top of the La Liga table.

Zidane’s side are still five points back and could see Barca extend that lead to eight when they face Villarreal on Sunday.

Positivity has, however, been returned to the Bernabeu and Real will head off on Club World Cup duty confident that they can defend their global crown in Abu Dhabi.
