Borussia Dortmund midfielder Christian Pulisic has re-written the history books in being named the U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year for 2017.

The 19-year-old has become the youngest recipient of the prize in its 34-year-old history, with Landon Donovan – who won for the first time at the age of 21 in 2003 – nudged down the pecking order.

Pulisic dominated the voting process to emerge victorious, getting the nod from 94 percent of those polled.

"It really is a big honor and I just want to thank everyone who voted for me to win U.S. Male Player of the Year," Pulisic said in a statement on the U.S. Soccer Federation’s official website.

"It’s something that I never could have imagined to be here in this position. I’m thankful for everyone who supported me and I’m excited for the future."

Pulisic’s peers were among those to help him to the prestigious prize, with votes cast by every player capped by the U.S. men's national team in 2017, men's national team and youth national team coaches, Major League Soccer, North American Soccer League and United Soccer League head coaches, as well as select former players, administrators and media members.

Recognition of the teenager’s efforts should come as little surprise, given the contribution he made to the USMNT across the calendar year.

He netted six goals and provided four assists and was involved in some form (goal, assist, earning a free-kick or a rebound on a shot) in 13 of the 17 goals scored during matches in which he featured.

Pulisic also impressed on a domestic stage in 2017.

His first full season with Bundesliga giant Dortmund saw him make 25 appearances across all competitions and contribute three goals and three assists.

He graced the Champions League with his club side, while winning the decisive penalty which helped Dortmund to a 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB-Pokal final.

On the back of those achievements, Pulisic has become the 24th player to scoop the U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year award since it was first bestowed upon Rick Davis back in 1984.
