Makinwa faults ABS’ depth for ‘downward slope'

The Saraki Boys started the season in an impressive fashion but waned before the break and their handler has given the main reason

Henry Makinwa faults ABS' squad depth for the ‘downward slope’ experienced towards the end of the first round of the ongoing Nigerian topflight campaign.

The Ilorin side are now placed 11th in the Nigeria Professional Football League table after spending most of their time, early in the season, ranked in relatively higher position.

Ahead of their Matchday 22 encounter against Niger Tornadoes, the former Nigeria international explains that not having enough ‘standard’ options led to his side’s slip.

“We experienced a downward slope due to tiredness of the players,” Makinwa told Goal.

“We had about 15 to 16 very good players and the other were not up to the first team standard. So we couldn't have enough options.

“Coupled with the fact that we play every Sundays and Wednesdays, plus the travels. From Kano to Ilorin, to Akwa Ibom," he added.

“It was so tough. The young boys couldn't resist it so that was why we had two draws at home; against Enyimba and Gombe United. And that brought us down again.

"Not that we performed so bad. We just had two draws at home against big teams.”

But Makinwa says that the mid-season transfer window gave them the option to recruit new legs so as to approach the league in whatever dimension it comes in.

“The plans are well spelt out as we have some new players to avoid what happened in the first round,” he said.

“We've got useful hands that would come in to help us in these Sunday, Wednesday games.

“One of them will play from the start on Sunday. He's just 18-year-old,” he concluded.
