Despite missing out in the final shortlist for this year's Fifa awards, the African legend has affirmed the status of the superstar as the best ever

Samuel Eto'o has stated that his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi remains 'the best player in the world ever' despite missing this year's Fifa's Best Men's Player award.

Messi did not make the final cut for the award as Croatia and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric pipped Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah to win the much-coveted individual prize in London.

Despite the snub, the Barcelona captain was included in the Fifa FIFPro World XI for the 12th consecutive year on Monday.

And Eto'o who is currently plying his trade in the Middle East with Qatar SC has eulogised the five-time Ballon d'Or winner as the greatest player ever.

"Leo, for us, will always be the best player in the world ever," Eto'o was quoted as saying by AS.

"The human beings have to choose and they chose those three players, who have done well this year too. But for people like me and others, it doesn't change the fact that Leo is the best player in the world ever."

Eto'o played alongside Lionel Messi in Barcelona where he won two Uefa Champions League trophies amongst other major titles before he left for Inter Milan in 2009.
