John Aloisi has quit his post as Brisbane Roar coach after the team's nightmare start to its A-League season.

Assistant coach Darren Davies will take the reins for Sunday's match against Sydney FC at Jubilee Oval, and the timeframe for Aloisi's replacement to be named is unclear.

The Queensland side sit ninth on the standings having only won one of their nine league matches this campaign and losing four successive games.

A 4-1 loss to Wellington Phoenix last weekend was the final straw for their outgoing coach, following a 4-2 defeat against Melbourne Victory the previous week, and the mutual decision between Aloisi and the club was made prior to their upcoming match against Sydney FC at Jubilee Oval.

"For the past three and a half years, I have given every minute of my life to make the Brisbane Roar a success," Aloisi said in a statement released by the club on Friday.

"Upon reflection of the current situation, I have made the difficult decision to stand down effective immediately as I believe this is in the best interest of the playing group and football club.

"Everybody knows the challenges of the past few years and I’m proud to have made the finals each season, qualified for Asia and have gone within a point of winning the Premiers Plate amid all of that.

"I cannot thank the players and football department enough for their support during all of the obstacles we have collectively faced and wish everybody connected to the club – the owners, the players, the fans and the staff – the absolute best for the balance of the season and beyond."

It's Aloisi's second A-League coaching gig to end in disaster following his sacking as Melbourne Heart manager in 2013;

He took over as the coach of the Roar in 2015 and led the club to the finals in every full season he had in the head role.
