FC Pune City have parted ways with manager Miguel Angel Portugal only after three games into their 2018-19 Indian Super League (ISL) season.

A statement released by the club on Friday read: 'The Rajesh Wadhawan Group and Arjun Kapoor co-owned FC Pune City have relieved Miguel Angel Portugal from his duties as the Head Coach of the club.'

The 62-year-old who led Delhi Dynamos to an 8th-place finish last season was snapped up the Maharashtra club in the close season. The Spaniard in the past has served as the head coach of Real Madrid Castilla and the Technical Director of their senior side in the LaLiga.

In what is the earliest sacking into an ISL season, Portugal's Pune City side managed only one point from their opening three games. Taking over from Ranko Popovic, who guided the Stallions to the playoffs last season, Portugal failed to instil any belief in Pune City management.

After a 1-1 draw away to Portugal's former employers at Delhi Dynamos, they lost the 'Maha Derby' against Mumbai City 2-0. The 3-0 defeat, in their first game at home this season to Bengaluru FC rubber-stamped Portugal's sacking.

The club has also announced that Technical Director Pradyum Reddy will take interim charge of the side with their next game away to high-flying FC Goa on Sunday.

Reports on Tuesday suggested that the decision had been made hours after the Bengaluru game but the official announcement came on Friday, only two days before their next game.

While the Pune City management have already started their search for a new manager, former Shillong Lajong head coach and Bengaluru FC assistant manager Reddy will have his first taste of ISL management on the hot seat.
