I-League 2017: Sanjoy Sen - Nothing special about East Bengal's performance

Mohun Bagan coach Sanjoy Sen feels that his side could have pumped in five or six goals against the Red and Golds..

The I-League season's first Kolkata Derby was won by Mohun Bagan thanks to Kingsley Eze's goal from a Sony Norde corner. Coach Sanjoy Sen spoke highly of his team's performance after the game.

"We should have won by at least five-to-six goals. We could have won a penalty also in the first half had the refereeing been better. But a win is a win whether one goal or by five goals," stated Sen.

Yuta Kinowaki put in an impressive performance in midfield for the Green and Maroons but Sen chose to focus more on the collective performance.

"It’s not only about him. We have a new team this year. To me the draw against Minerva was as good as a defeat. When we lose a game, these issues crop up. Today we have won so everything looks fine," said Sen.

Mohun Bagan striker Aser Dipanda, who joined this season from Shillong Lajong, had to be replaced after he suffered an ankle injury in the second half. "He has been hospitalized and will undergo an MRI scan," Sen confirmed.

The former United SC coach who continues to hold an impeccable home record against Khalid Jamil did not find "anything special" in the opposition's performance today.

"They played too many aerial balls. They did not create a single opportunity. When Dipanda left the field, I only had one striker in Ansumana Kromah and so we had to defend. That was the only time, they attacked. I didn’t see anything special in their team," quipped Sen.

But Sen remained cautious after winning the marquee clash and was reluctant to comment on his side's chances of lifting the I-League trophy.

"We cannot say anything at this point. Last season we had defeated East Bengal but failed to win the title. In the Federation Cup, we won the derby but didn't win the trophy. I will be happy if we win the trophy by beating them."

Kingsley Eze confessed that scoring in a derby is a dream come true for him.

"This is my first goal in the I-League. Scoring in the Kolkata derby is special. I cannot explain how happy I am. It is the best thing that happened to me recently. It's like a dream come true," said the Nigerian.
