The midfielder paid tribute to his colleagues after they won the FA Cup round of 64 in his absence

Asante Kotoko midfielder Emmanuel Gyamfi has paid tribute to his team-mates after they knocked out second-tier side BYF Academy 3-1 on penalties in the FA Cup round of 64 at the Gyamfi Park in Bekwai on Sunday.

Despite Michael Akuffo missing an advantage to score the opener for Kotoko in the first half from the spot, Kwame Boateng capitalised on a poor communication from the hosts' backline and headed in a cross from Baba Mahama, to put the visitors in front. But Thomas Gyawu equalised for the hosts and pushed the game to penalty shootout.

The visitors’ goalkeeper Isaac Amoako, who was making his first start since 2015, made two saves to win the day for Kotoko.

"It is a great game and although we had to rely on penalties to qualify, I'm impressed with the output of my teammates," Gyamfi told Goal.

"Now, we hope to build on this to revive our poor form in the Ghana Premier League since we've gone five games without a win. Everyone at the club is not happy and we need to change a lot of things with a victory in the league.

"We're playing our next game against Aduana Stars and it's one of the games that will define our season but I'm optimistic of a victory. We need to a win badly and will surely have it with collective efforts, he added.

The draw for the next round of the FA Cup will be held next week but Kotoko are expected to lock horns with either a club from Ashanti or Brong Ahafo region.
