Goalkeeper Mzimela scores twice to give Platinum Stars victory

Goalkeeper Mbongeni Mzimela brought the world of football to his feet after scoring twice to inspire Platinum Stars to a 3-2 aggregate win over Vipers SC in the first round of the Caf Confederation Cup.

The 31-year-old kept his calm on two separate occasions to convert two spot-kicks, and help Dikwena overturn a 1-0 first leg defeat suffered in Uganda last weekend.

Mzimela has now scored three goals in his last two matches for the Rustenburg-based club, having scored against his former club AmaZulu in the Nedbank Cup on Wednesday.

Stars were facing Caf Confederation Cup elimination on the away-goal rule when they won a penalty deep into stoppage time.

Mzimela had given his side the lead, but Milton Karisa reduced the deficit with a 55th minute strike on the night.

But having not missed from the spot this season, Mzimela stepped up and coolly converted the resulting penalty to seal Dikwena's passage to the second and final round of the continental tournament.

Mzimela went into the encounter against Vipers already sitting on two goals this season, and Saturday's brace saw him increase his tally to four in all official competiions.
