It has been three seasons since Kaizer Chiefs lifted silverware and it seems that head coach Giovanni Solinas may be growing anxious to get the proverbial monkey off his back.
Solinas recently took over at Amakhosi at the beginning of the season, filling the void left by former coach Steve Komphela.
Nonetheless, after failing to secure the MTN8 title for another season and with the Telkom Knockout Cup on the horizon, Solinas admits that winning trophies may not be easy.
"Kaizer Chiefs compete to try to win trophies. But competition is difficult here, it is very strong. It is not easy because the opponents are very good,” Solinas told the media.
While Solinas reveals that competing for honours this season won’t be easy, he admits that for a club of the calibre of the Soweto giants winning trophies is essential.
"We try to fight to win trophies because we are Kaizer Chiefs...Kaizer Chiefs compete to win trophies,” he said.
"We need the trophy for our fans, to make our fans happy. So, we are fighting and working hard to [achieve) that," he added.
Chiefs though, have an opportunity to give their fans something to smile about as they take on Bloemfontein Celtic in the Macufe Cup on Sunday.
Once again, Komphela will come up against his former side. The last time these two sides met in the league, Chiefs were held by Free State-based outfit, but Chiefs fans will hope that this time around, they emerge victorious from the annual friendly match.
