Ashanti Gold celebrate
Who will stand taller on Sunday evening in Obuasi between the Miners and the Porcupine Warriors?

The first Asante derby of the Ghana Premier League will be staged at the Len Clay Sports Stadium in Obuasi on Sunday.

Hosts Ashanti Gold are in the form of their life at the moment and currently on top of the league table while the visitors, Asante Kotoko, are still struggling to find their rhythm in the new campaign.

Both teams hired new coaches ahead of the season. C.K Akonnor came in for the Miners while former Ghana U-17 coach Paa Kwesi Fabin took charge at Baba Yara Sports stadium in Kumasi.

They have since reorganised their teams for the new season, but Akonnor’s expertise appears to be more visible for now.

Ashanti Gold, who ran a woeful campaign last season, are a team to beat this term. The overhaul carried out was near perfect, all departments of the set-up are functioning brilliantly.

However, this is the first time they would face a tangible test in the season, with Kotoko counting on their pedigree and experience, of which they boast of more than AshGold.

However, it remains an Asante Derby, despite its Ghana Premier League’s umbrella. And for that reason, the Miners might have no cause for fear as they are yet to stumble, maintaining an unbeaten run in the derby thus far.

Buoyed by their renewed form and momentum, they could stun the Porcupine Warriors and snatch the bragging rights on the day, and send a warning to all other teams in the league.

Kotoko are no pushovers though. They have the quality to upset a team like AshGold any day. All they need to do is stay focus and never underestimate the opponents, who are yet to achieve half of what the Porcupines have done in their history.

But it is played on the pitch and not on paper!
