The day one of the zonal playoffs of the Copa Coca Cola U15 championship in Owerri witnessed the impressive performance of Rivers.

Rivers representatives, Community Secondary School, Amadi Ama showed Owerri people why they should be regarded as overwhelming favourites to emerge as the zone’s representatives at the national playoffs in Lagos after they pummeled their foes, Community Secondary School, Ndaburu, Ebenyi, Ebonyi State in a rather one sided encounter played on Tuesday at the Owerri City College in Imo State.

The Port Harcourt side had everything going well for them right from the start of the match and they were quick to exert their superiority over their opponents from Ebonyi as soon as the match kicked off.  The players of Rivers who were obviously more mature and stronger than their counterparts from Ebonyi and they made this evident with the forceful way they started the game.

Rivers could have scored as early as the match started but they were repelled by the Ebonyi goalkeeper who kept them at bay through his impressive performance but they broke his strong will when Godwin Achibong scored a opening goal of the match before the end of the first half. The goalkeeper will have a share of the blame after he allowed the shot from Achibong to slip through his hands.

The Port Harcourt side scored two further goals in the second half through Wisdom Nnabuihe and Joseph Nwakanma to ensure that they topple their foes by 3-0 in their first match of the zone. The third is a delight to watch after Nwakanma curled his effort beyond the gaping hands of Ebonyi goalkeeper with about three minutes to the end of the encounter from a free kick from about 25 metres to the goalpost.

The win has taken Rivers to the pinnacle of the zone with three points from a match and plus three goal difference while Ebonyi’s chances of progressing have been dealt a  bitter blow with the crunching  defeat they suffered in the hands of Rivers on Tuesday and they must produce world class performance if they are to stand any chance of  picking the sole ticket to Lagos.

Holy Name Secondary School Umuchu, Anambra and Ibeku High School, Abia played out a 1-1 draw in the day one of the zonal playoffs of the Copa Coca Cola U15 Championship holding in Owerri’s City College.

Not much separated both teams in the early exchanges and it was no surprise the half time didn’t produce any goal but the second half was more lively with the Anambra side trying to assert their superiority over their Abia side.

Anambra did get the opening goal through Chinedu Israel who capitalized on a defensive blunder to slot the ball beyond the reach of the Abia goalkeeper and they still continue to press their opponents to see if they can add more. They were able to curtail their effectiveness until they lost concentration with about three minutes to the end of the encounter.

Even though they were unable to match their opponents who were better organized, Abia still clawed their way back into reckoning when they forced their foes to make mistake in the dying moments of the match. The gaffe resulted into a penalty kick that was awarded to Abia representatives .Chijioke Amanjoh missed the initial effort from the penalty spot taken but he scored from the follow up to restore parity and ensure that the tie ended in a 1-1 draw.
