Goal takes a look at whether or not the Chilli Boys are capable of pulling the unthinkable against Amakhosi in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals

Chippa United  are regarded as the underdogs ahead of their eagerly-anticipated Nedbank Cup semi-final encounter with Kaizer Chiefs .

The Chilli Boys will only be making their second appearance in the last four of the lucrative tournament, while Amakhosi are still the Cup Kings of South African football.

However, Chippa United have already made a big statement by eliminating Premier Soccer League (PSL) title contenders, Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits.

This then begs the question of whether or not Chippa can stun Chiefs at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and reach their maiden major Cup final.

In Chiefs, Chippa will face a team which has been resurrected in the Nedbank Cup under German coach Ernst Middendorp as they look to clinch a record-extending 14th title.

Amakhosi made their intentions clear by eliminating one of the tournament favourites and current MTN Cup champions Cape Town City in the quarter-finals.

However, the Chilli Boys are no pushovers as they have an experienced mentor in Clinton Larsen, who has tasted success as a coach having led Bloemfontein Celtic to the Telkom Knockout Cup triumph in 2012.

Larsen faced Chiefs twice as a Lamontville Golden Arrows coach this season and he came out tops on both occasions, before moving to Chippa in January 2019, and there is no doubt that he can mastermind Amakhosi's downfall yet again.

The former South Africa and Orlando Pirates midfielder has quality and experienced players at his disposal at the Eastern Cape-based side.

The likes Kurt Lentjies, Mark Mayambela and Thabo Rakhale have been very influential during the Chilli Boys' road to the semi-finals - scoring and creating goals.

Wins over Wits and Sundowns proved that Chippa can beat any team at any time, and Chiefs will be wary of the abovementioned players, who have what it takes to inspire Larsen's side to the final.

Furthermore, the former National First Division (NFD) champions have nothing to lose as they have no pressure to win the Cup unlike their visitors, Chiefs.

This makes the Chilli Boys a dangerous team as they have a bigger fish to fry in the PSL where they have everything to fight for in order to retain their status in the top flight league.

Chippa are expected to give it their best shot against Chiefs, but if they fail to advance to the final, they will turn their focus to the PSL which is more important at this stage of the season.
