Goal takes a look at Bucs' first round performance in the league and discusses their position on the log

The 2018/19 PSL first round has come to end and clubs will be reviewing their performances during the Christmas break.

Orlando Pirates finished the first round on second spot on the league standings having accumulated 27 points from 15 matches.

The Soweto giants rounded off the first round with a convincing 3-1 victory over Free State Stars away, before turning their focus to 2018/19 Caf Champions League.

Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic's side had a slow start to the season collecting four points from a possible 12 in their first four league matches.

An away victory over Black Leopards in late August sparked Pirates' revival and they asserted themselves as serious contenders for this season's PSL title.

The 2018 Telkom Knockout Cup runners-up are now enjoying an 11-match unbeaten run in the league having secured victories over top teams such as SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs.

They are amongst the pacesetters in the race for the title - boasting the second best attack in the competition having scored 19 goals from 15 games.

Pirates find themselves in a good position in the race and they have to carry their momentum into the next second round.

They need to take advantage of the fact that the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who are currently placed fifth on the league standings, are yet to find their mojo this season.

On the other hand, Wits have been inconsistent at times, while other perennial title contenders SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs are blowing hot and cold.

It is also imperative for Bucs to turn draws into wins which would help assert themselves as the favourites to clinch the trophy by pulling away from their rivals opening a gap at the top.

They have recorded the most draws (6) amongst the top four teams on the log and their current unbeaten run could count for nothing in their quest for glory unless they turn them into wins.

Consistency will be key to the Pirates' hopes of winning the title for the fifth time in the second round.
