The Citizens are set to lock horns with Sundowns in a highly anticipated clash.
However, before they could begin preparations for the Tshwane giants, City had the small matter of attempting to fend off a tricky Golden Arrows.
City and their coach were given a major boost ahead of kick-off as they welcomed the veteran midfielder back from injury as he took his pace on the bench.
But Modise did not feature in the goalless draw, leading many to question whether or he was being kept for the game against Sundowns.
“My priority is always the game that we are playing because for me (it is) important to win, to get to the first game than worry about what’s coming,” McCarthy told the media.
“I think if I was not forced to make the Surprise change first, I think that really buggered me up because now I had to improvise and had to bring on Norodien when I wanted to wait first, because of injury,” he explained.
“That gave me two subs and as the time went passed they looked like they were waiting to pounce on the counter and I think if we could hurt them probably with the speed of Craig and Norodien and bringing Gift, if not for the forced change I would have had Teko in there,” he added.
McCarthy though has hinted that Modise could feature against his former side.
“Now we look (at) how we can mix things up and get Teko back in there (against Sundowns),” he concluded.
City reached the MTN8 final last season only to lose out to SuperSport United but they will hope to overcome Sundowns this time around and go on and clinch their maiden MTN8 crown.
