Boyle ruled out for season with injury

A big blow for the new Socceroo

Martin Boyle will miss the rest of the season for club side Hibernian after an injury he sustained on Socceroos duty required surgery.

The Scottish-born winger picked up a contact injury after coming on as a substitute against Oman with the resulting surgery set to keep him on the sidelines for an extended period.

"Gutted to learn my season is over but the operation was a success and was the best solution for me to extend my playing career over time," Boyle wrote on Instagram.

"Will do everything I can to come back fitter and stronger and continue to help the team on the field."

Boyle was set to play a big part for the Socceroos at the Asian Cup having scored a double in his first start for Australia against Lebanon.

The 25 year old had also been in good form for Hibs picking up four goals and four assists from 18 games this season.

Boyle has joined the likes of Aaron Mooy and Daniel Arzani on the sidelines for Australia at the Asian Cup, who began their title defence with a 1-0 loss to Jordan.
