The winger spent some time with the Blues, largely playing away on loan before permanently severing ties with the side in summer last year, joining none other than the Magpies after an initial short-term deal.
For this reason, the matchday three tie at St. James' Park means a lot to the attacker.
"It's good to have this relationship back again, to see old friends," Atsu told his club's official website.
"I'm very happy that after the game, I'm going to meet up with them, but before I meet them, I hope that the three points will be for Newcastle.
"We are Newcastle, we are a team.
"We have a very good team spirit and we are ready to compete with any team."
Left out of Newcastle's set-up for their last match with Cardiff City, Atsu is hoping to make a rather prompt return, and possibly into the starting XI for the home fixture.
"I'm ready for any game," the former Porto man said.
"The decision is for Rafa Benítez to make - I'm just focused on training, working hard and I respect every decision that our manager makes."
Last season, Atsu made 28 Premier League appearances, involving 19 starts, and scored twice to help the Magpies finish 10th.
