Asisat Oshoala hails Nigeria’s performance vs. Gambia

Asisat Oshoala has applauded Nigeria following their 6-0 whitewash of Gambia in the second leg of the African Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Agege Stadium on Monday.

Having only managed a slim 1-0 win over the Queen Scorpions in the first leg, the Super Falcons completed the job in front of their home fans with Desire Oparanozie scoring four times in the tie while the 23-year-old also registered a brace to help Thomas Dennerby’s side nick their 13th appearance in the competition.

And reacting to the feat, the three-time African Women Footballer of the Year said: “We are happy to show our worth and show the world what we can do.

“And coming at home to play is a good one for all Nigerians to know their support was not in vain.

“The officiating in Gambia was really bad and the pitch was bad.

“But I think today we played play very good today it was better than the first game and the environment was really good and having our fans making them enjoy the game and feeding them with a lot of goals it is a good one for the team.”

The West Africans will be heading to the tournament in Ghana as defending champions and the former Arsenal striker is confident that they can defend the title they won in 2016, although she acknowledged that it will not be a walk in the park.

“For me and as I always say, winning the trophy is always the primary option and whatever that comes with it is secondary," she continued.

“We are expecting a lot of teams to be aiming to take over but we just have to work more and put in more effort to defend our championship.”
