Al Ahly have fired coach Patrice Carteron after the team was eliminated from the Arab Club Champions Cup on Thursday.

The Cairo giants were held to a 1-1 by Emirati side Al Wasl, triggering the sacking of Carteron, who also saw his side surrender a 3-1 first leg lead to lose the Caf Champions League final to Esperance on a 4-3 aggregate scoreline two weeks ago.

Assistant coach Mohamed Youssef has been elevated to hold temporary reigns of the team. “The Al Ahly board of directors have decided to dismiss coach Patrice Carteron and the team's fitness coach Michael Lindeman," read a statement by the club.

"The management has also decided to appoint assistant coach Mohamed Youssef to be in charge of the team temporarily until the new coach is appointed, while Sayed Abdel-Hafiz will be the team's football director."
