The green and gold star has lamented the debate about representing his club and country

Socceroos star Tom Rogic has explained to Celtic fans that he did 'everything in my power' to play in the Old Firm derby before heading to the Asian Cup with his national team.

The 26-year-old will miss Saturday's match against city rivals Rangers at Ibrox as he travels to the UAE for the tournament - with Australia's title defence beginning against Jordan on January 6.

Using his Instagram account, Rogic posted that a 'decision has been made' about his availability for Celtic and he wishes there was never a debate been representing club and country.

"I’m very disappointed to be missing the game on the 29th. A decision has been made but I did everything in my power to stay for the match," Rogic posted.

"I am a proud Australian but also love my club. It should never have been a debate between playing for club or country, ideally it would have been for both.

"Another challenge awaits in the Asian Cup, where I will give my all and proudly represent my country."

The debate over Rogic's availability has made big news in Scotland with Celtic coach Brendan Rodgers showing his dismay and pundit Chris Sutton openly criticising Australia and the Asian Cup tournament.

The former Central Coast Mariner will travel alongside fellow Scottish-based Australians Mark Milligan, Martin Boyle and Jamie Maclaren to the Middle Eastern country.
