Commentary

That's all from us today folks, we hope you enjoyed the game!
This victory sees West Brom close the gap slightly on Newcastle United in 17th, but they are still eight points adrift and they face Everton next time out. Meanwhile Brighton are now winless in their last four Premier League games and they face Leicester City next weekend.
West Brom clinch three vital points as they beat Brighton 1-0 at the Hawthorns thanks to Bartley’s goal on 11 minutes. It was a game full of chances and controversies, with two missed Brighton penalties, as Gross and Welbeck struck the woodwork. There was a big VAR decision in the first half to deny Brighton an equaliser and then numerous opportunities for Seagulls to equalise, but they just couldn’t get the ball into the back of the net.
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: WEST BROM 1-0 BRIGHTON
90' + 2' Moder whips a lovely cross into the box from the right wing, but none of his team mates are on the same wavelength as him and the ball goes all the way through and nothing is created.
90' There will be a minimum of four minutes added time played at the end of the second half.
89' West Brom are trying to run down the clock now, taking their time at any set pieces and throw-ins to try and see the game out.
87' Blocked! Bartley makes a superb sliding tackle to deny Brighton after they work the ball into a really good shooting position and should test Johnstone, but the West Brom skipper gets across and stops the shot.
86' West Brom have gone very defensive now, there is less than five minutes remaining on the clock and they are sitting deep, just trying to see the game out as Brighton push forward in search of an equaliser.
J. Moder
B. White
83' Brighton have also made a change, with White replaced by Moder.
H. Robson-Kanu
M. Diagne
83' Third and final West Brom substitution now, with Diagne heading off the pitch and he has been replaced by Robson-Kanu.
81' This is the first time a team has had two players miss a Premier League penalty in the same game since October 2019 (Man Utd v Norwich).
B. Ivanović
Matheus Pereira
79' Another West Brom substitution now and they seem to be trying to see the game out, with Pereira the man coming off and he has been replaced by Ivanovic.
77' CHANCES! Another stop by Johnstone to deny Brighton! They just can't seem to score today. Veltman with a powerful strike that Johnstone gets behind and then Gross fires wide shortly after.
D. Welbeck
Penalty Miss
75' PENALTY MISSED! Welbeck sends Johnstone the wrong way, but he strikes the bottom left-hand post and the rebound the comes back to the striker, but he can’t sort his feet out quickly enough and is unable to convert. However, the referee halts play as Welbeck is not allowed to touch the ball again and awards West Brom a free-kick. It remains the hosts who lead 1-0.
74' PENALTY! Another Brighton penalty, their second of the game after Townsend trips Gross from behind, taking the legs of the Brighton man and he goes down. The referee awards a penalty straight away.
G. Diangana
M. Phillips
72' West Brom make their first substitution of the game, with Phillips the man coming off and he has been replaced by Diangana.
71' It looks like Bartley might have an issue here for West Brom, as he is down on the pitch, but then as soon as the referee goes over to him, he jumps and appears fine to continue.
69' West Brom are starting to sit deep and soak up the pressure now, with Brighton dominating possession. There is still plenty of time left to play, can they get an equaliser?
67' SAVE! Maupay does well down the right wing, cuts inside and then lays it off to Trossard on the edge of the box, who tries to curl it into the top right-hand corner of the net. However, he doesn't get it close enough to the corner and Johnstone makes a good stop.
66' Almost! Diagne almost gets on the end of a long ball over the top and the striker is just beaten to it by Sanchez, in the nick of time.
64' Brighton have only won one of their 11 top-flight meetings with West Brom (D6 L4), winning 3-1 in September 2017.
62' CHANCE! Veltman with a free header after a corner is whipped into the box and the right-back didn't have any West Brom players anywhere near him, but he fires the ball over the bar.
D. Welbeck
A. Connolly
61' Another Brighton substitution now, with Connolly the man coming off and he has been replaced by Welbeck.
60' Great challenge! Yokuslu makes a vital tackle to deny Connolly a shot at goal, after the ball drops to him around 20 yards out. The midfielder looks to be in a bit of pain following the challenge, but will be fine to continue.
59' Wild effort! The ball falls nicely to Bissouma on the edge of the penalty area and he drills a powerful effort towards goal, but it flies high over the West Brom crossbar.
57' Brighton seem to be trying to break forward on the counter and catch West Brom out at the back when they can, but the Baggies defence are doing well at the back and they haven't allowed the visitors any chances so far.
55' It is all West Brom at the moment, they are pressing forward in numbers trying to get a second goal, which would probably see the game out.
52' CHANCE! Brighton should score! Maupay does well to get past a couple of defenders in box after a quick one-two, he gets a shot away and it is parried by Johnstone, but straight into the path of Connolly, who seemingly has a tap-in from a few yards out. However, he blasts the shot over the crossbar.
50' Brighton have lost just one of their last six away league games (W2 D3), with that defeat coming at league leaders Manchester City.
48' The intensity is good in these opening few minutes of the second half, with West Brom pushing forward and looking to double their lead early on.
46' The second half is under way!
A. Lallana
A. Mac Allister
46' Brighton have made a substitution ahead of the second half, with Mac Allister the man coming off and he has been replaced by Lallana.
The action didn't stop there, with Connolly and Maupay also having excellent goal scoring chances late on in the half, but they couldn't convert, before Maitland-Niles went close at the end of stoppage time. Somehow there has only been one goal, but we could see a few more in the second half if the first is anything to go by.
What a hectic first half of football! West Brom lead 1-0 thanks to Bartley’s header on 11 minutes, but since then we’ve seen plenty of action. First Brighton have a penalty awarded by VAR after a handball by Yoksulu, but Gross strikes the crossbar from the spot. However, the main drama came around the half an hour mark, when Dunk took a free-kick quickly and had the ball in the back of the net, but the referee disallowed it, then awarded it and then VAR ruled out.
45' + 5' HALF-TIME: WEST BROM 1-0 BRIGHTON
45' + 4' SAVE! Another stop, but at the other end of the pitch! Maitland-Niles with a low strike towards the bottom right-hand corner of the net, but Sanchez gets down quickly and makes a good save.
45' + 2' ANOTHER CHANCE! Brighton continue to press and this time Maupay finds himself in space in the box and he tries to find the bottom left-hand corner, after a cross from Gross. However, he doesn't strike it cleanly and it flies well wide. He should be doing a lot better from there.
45' + 1' SAVE! Connolly with a brilliant chance late on for the Seagulls, he sneaks in behind the West Brom defence, cuts inside and tries to fire the ball into the top right-hand corner, but Johnstone makes an excellent stop.
45' There will be a minimum of four minutes added time played at the end of the first half.
44' West Brom are keeping their shape well, defending in numbers and not allowing Brighton any time or space on the ball in their half. Good performance so far by the Baggies.
42' It doesn't look like we are going to see any more goals before half-time, with the pace dropping and Brighton just look short of ideas and can't get going. Perhaps the penalty miss and disallowed goal are still playing on their mind.
40' There’s not long left to play before the end of the first half now, can Brighton get back into this game before the half-time whistle?
38' West Brom are winless in their last seven Premier League games (D3 L4), and also their last seven Premier League home games (D2 L5). The Baggies have conceded a league-high 55 goals so far this season.
36' The game has calmed down slightly now after the hectic last few minutes we've seen, with Brighton enjoying the majority of the possession in midfield.
34' The referee has been over to the sidelines to explain the decision to both managers. The free-kick is now finally retaken and this time Johnstone is alert to the danger and he comfortably gathers the effort from Dunk.
32' NO GOAL! After plenty of deliberating, the goal has definitely been ruled out. It seems VAR had been looking to see if the ball crossed the line before or after a second blast of the whistle from the referee and this is why the goal has been disallowed. It remains West Brom who lead 1-0.
30' VAR! The goal decision has now been changed by the officials and the goal has been given! There is a lot of confusion on the pitch, with both teams arguing the decision. It was a lovely piece of skill and finish from Dunk to catch Johnstone out and it appears to be 1-1.
29' GOAL DISALLOWED! Dunk takes the initiative and takes a quick free-kick as West Brom are getting their wall ready, which catches everyone by surprise, including Johnstone and the ball flies into the back of the net. The referee is saying that he hadn't blown his whistle to allow the free-kick, but there was a sharp blow of the whistle, which Brighton thought was allowing them to play on.
28' Free-kick to Brighton in a very good position now, after Gallagher fouls Mac Allister around 20 yards out and they have a terrific opportunity to score.
26' Not too far away! Diagne gets on the end of a terrific cross into the box from the right by Furlong and the striker tries to glance it into the far left-hand corner of the net. However, he doesn't make the contact he wanted and it flies wide.
25' Brighton have failed to score six of their 22 Premier League penalties, with Gross, Glenn Murray and Neal Maupay missing 2 each and Gross has now missed two of his last four penalties.
23' Brighton are starting to push forward a little bit more now, they have the hosts camped inside their own half defending, but there isn't much pace to their passing, so it is quite easy for West Brom at the back.
21' West Brom will be relieved to still be ahead here, they just need to settle the game down now and get back into their rhythm as it is a bit stop-start at the moment.
P. Groß
Penalty Miss
19' PENALTY MISSED! Gross steps up to take the penalty and he tries to get as much power behind it as he can, but he smashes it against the crossbar and West Brom then clear the danger!
18' BRIGHTON PENALTY! The referee has reviewed the footage and Brighton have been awarded a penalty following the handball by Yokuslu. What a chance for the visitors to get back into the game.
18' Lee Mason is being called over the pitch side monitor to take a look at the penalty incident and it doesn't look good for the West Brom midfielder.
16' PENALTY SHOUT! Burn goes up for a header as a corner is whipped into the box and Yokuslu challenges with him, with his arms raised and it strikes his outstretched arm. Nothing is given on the pitch and play resumes, but VAR will take a look.
16' CLOSE! Connolly almost catches Johnstone out after Maupay plays a quick ball through to him on the edge of the box and Connolly quickly turned and fired an effort towards the bottom left-hand corner of the net. However, it takes a slight deflection off Bartley and goes inches wide of the post.
15' West Brom have never lost in 10 previous home league meetings with Brighton (W6 D4). It’s the most they’ve faced an opponent at home in the Football League or Premier League without ever suffering defeat.
13' It was poor marking from Brighton at the goal, they had plenty of players back in the box, but Bartley was allowed time and space to get to the ball first and he punished the visitors.
C. Gallagher
Assist
11' It's a terrific set-piece delivery into the box by Gallagher, straight onto the head of Bartley and he made no mistake with the finish.
K. Bartley
Goal
11' GOAL! West Brom are ahead after just 11 minutes, it's 1-0! Bartley rises highest as a corner is whipped into the box by Gallagher and the centre-back nods it into the far corner of the net, giving Sanchez no chance of saving it. The perfect start for the Baggies.
11' Blocked! The ball falls nicely to Yokuslu around 25 yards out, he takes it down and then fires an effort towards goal, but Bissouma gets in the way and diverts it out of play for a corner.
9' As you might expect in the early stages, there isn't much between the two teams, despite there being a 12-point gap in the Premier League table. Both teams battling for possession in the middle of the pitch.
7' There hasn't been much action in either final third so far. White tries to feed Maupay over the top of the West Brom defence, but Johnstone is quick off his line and gathers.
5' Both teams are just settling into the game now, with Brighton seeing a bit more of the ball as they keep it nicely in midfield and along the back four. Veltman and Burn are pushing up high down the flanks, adding some extra width.
3' Good start here by West Brom, they've kicked off on the front foot and look positive in the final third, but on this occasion, they just can't find the ball into the path of Diagne.
1' We're under way!
The teams are out on the pitch and kick-off is just a few minutes away, stay tuned for all the match action!
Brighton have also only made one change to their starting XI, with Alzate the man dropping out of the side and he has been replaced in midfield by Connolly.
Sam Allardyce has made just one change to his starting line-up, with O’Shea the man coming into the side and he has replaced the suspended Ajayi.
BRIGHTON SUBS: Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Jason Steele, Adam Lallana, Andi Zeqiri, Danny Welbeck, Steven Alzate, Davy Propper, Percy Tau, Jakub Moder.
BRIGHTON (4-4-2): Robert Sanchez; Joel Veltman, Ben White, Lewis Dunk, Dan Burn; Pascal Gross, Yves Bissouma, Alexis Mac Allister, Aaron Connolly; Leandro Trossard, Neal Maupay.
WEST BROM SUBS: Jake Livermore, Romaine Sawyers, Karlan Grant, Hal Robson-Kanu, David Button, Branislav Ivanovic, Lee Peltier, Grady Diangana, Callum Robinson.
WEST BROM (4-1-4-1): Sam Johnstone; Darnell Furlong, Dara O'Shea, Kyle Bartley, Conor Townsend; Okay Yokuslu; Matt Phillips, Conor Gallagher, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Matheus Pereira; Mbaye Diagne.
Brighton’s six-game unbeaten streak came to an end last time out, as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace and this sees them sit 16th in the table, four points above Fulham who occupy the final relegation spot.
West Brom find themselves 11 points adrift in their bid to remain in the Premier League this season. They are 19th, having failed to win in any of their last seven games, which includes four defeats and three draws. They picked up a point last time out, after a goalless draw with Burnley, despite Semi Ajayi being sent off for the Baggies.
