Commentary

Thank you for joining our coverage, we hope you enjoyed the game. Until next time, goodbye!
Southampton host Aston Villa in their next Premier League game, while Burnley face Bournemouth at Turf Moor.
There goes the full-time whistle! Burnley took the lead in extraordinary circumstances as Ings allowed a Westwood corner to creep in at the near post inside the opening two minutes, but the striker made amends with a fine low finish 16 minutes later as Southampton dominated the first half. The hosts struggled to impose themselves after the break, however, and a moment of magic from Clarets substitute Vydra, who thumped home on the hour, handed the visitors all three points. It finishes 2-1 to Burnley!
90' + 4' FULL-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 1-2 BURNLEY
90' + 2' Southampton have everyone forward as they desperately search for a late equaliser, but they are being forced backwards as Burnley press them. The hosts just can't craft another opportunity.
90' SAVE! What a crucial save! Djenepo's left-wing cross comes to Hojbjerg, unmarked at the back post! However, he can't get the ball out of his feet quickly, allowing Pope time to cover his angles and make an important save from the resulting shot!
89' SAVE! Rodriguez works a yard for himself on the left and thumps a strike towards the top corner, but McCarthy is there to tip it over!
M. Obafemi
Yellow Card
88' Obafemi catches Bardsley in the face with a stray elbow and may count himself lucky to escape with just a yellow card.
C. Adams
S. Long
86' Long is now withdrawn for Adams as Hasenhuttl introduces a fresh striker in search of a second equaliser.
84' Vydra runs off the shoulder down the left and latches onto a long ball forward. He elects to go alone and tries to hit a shot from distance, but it's tame and is easily gathered by McCarthy.
82' NO PENALTY! Stephens drives forward from defence and gets down the right before crossing into the arm of Mee. There are furious appeals for handball, but VAR rules that because the defender's arm was by his side, no penalty is to be awarded!
80' Burnley craft an excellent move down the left and the ball is fired across the face of goal by Rodriguez, but neither Vydra nor Hendrick gamble and are static as the ball flashes in front of them!
78' OVER! Ward-Prowse's corner is cleared, but only as far as Armstrong on the edge of the box. He takes a touch and tries to guide the ball into the top-right corner, but it's just too high!
77' Armstrong receives the ball on the right, cuts inside and hits a fierce strike with his left foot that takes a wicked deflection and loops behind for a corner.
75' McNeil bursts down the left and cuts it back, but the pass is a little behind Hendrick and his off-balance strike finds Rodriguez at the byline, but the striker is clearly offside.
M. Obafemi
K. Walker-Peters
73' Hasenhuttl makes a positive change as he looks to win the game, bringing right-back Walker-Peters off for a forward in Obafemi. Ward-Prowse drops in at full-back and Armstrong shuffles into the centre to accommodate the substitution.
72' Bardsley now takes on a very ambitious shot from range, leaning back and blazing into the stands.
70' Burnley appear to have been buoyed by their goal on the hour mark and have been the better side in the last 10 minutes or so. They are enjoying their best spell of the game so far.
68' The Saints' struggles are a continuation of Southampton's poor home form. They have earned the fewest points of any home side in the league this season (11), and are now the first team to have conceded 30 goals at home this season.
66' Southampton are now having to come from behind once again despite having been the better side. This will be a real test of the team's mental fortitude.
64' That was Vydra's fifth Premier League goal, just his second for Burnley, and his first since September 2018 (against Bournemouth). It is also his first ever Premier League goal away from home.
62' Long tries to level things up once more as he takes up a good position in the centre of the area, but his left-footed effort is fired wide of the far post!
J. Hendrick
Assist
60' Hendrick's ball from deep into Vydra in a central position on the edge of the box was outstanding and caught Southampton off-guard, although the substitute had plenty to do himself after receiving the pass.
M. Vydra
Goal
60' GOAL!! VYDRA THUMPS BURNLEY BACK IN FRONT!! Hendrick pings a raking ball into the substitute from the right and he takes the ball on the turn, before lashing a thunderous half-volley into the top-left corner with his left foot! What a strike! It's now 2-1 to Burnley!
58' Ings latches onto a long ball forward from McCarthy and works a yard on Tarkowski with a clever feint before crossing into the box, but it's a little high and has to be retrieved on the far side.
56' The game has bene much scrappier in the second half so far and another free-kick is awarded as Bardsley arrives late into a challenge and clatters into Djenepo on the touchline.
54' Taylor goes flying in and wins the ball before catching Armstrong with his follow-through. No foul is awarded, and the Southampton midfielder stays down initially before eventually getting back to his feet. He should be fine to continue.
52' Vestergaard picks out an excellent, raking diagonal ball to put Ings through down the right, but the striker just can't quite control and Pope is out to gather.
50' Vydra looks puzzled as he turns past Stephens at the byline and is felled just outside the box, but isn't awarded a free-kick. The Southampton defender is perhaps a little lucky to have gotten away with that.
48' SIDE-NETTING! Bertrand picks up a dangerous position inside the box on the left and receives the ball before lashing at goal, but he can only fidn the side-netting!
47' Southampton have gone on to win each of their last five Premier League games in which they've conceded the first goal and gone in at half-time level. Meanwhile, Burnley have failed to win each of their last nine league games when scoring first and being pegged back before the break and going in level (D2 L7).
46' We're back under way for the second half!
Southampton, despite conceding so early, have been the better side throughout the half and Burnley have struggled to get to grips with the hosts' pressing and incisive forward movement. Dyche will certainly be the less pleased of the two managers at the break. Additionally, both teams will have to cope with losing an important forward due to injury, with Wood and Boufal forced off the field.
There goes the half-time whistle! Southampton conceded a bizarre goal direct from a corner inside the opening two minutes as Ings let the cross go at the near post. However, he atoned for his error with a fantastic low strike into the bottom corner to level the scores 16 minutes later. It's 1-1 at the break!
45' + 5' HALF-TIME: SOUTHAMPTON 1-1 BURNLEY
45' + 4' The force of the wind is having an impact on the quality of the game as the half-time whistle approaches, with neither side able to hold on to the ball for long spells.
45' + 2' Burnley are conceding needless free-kicks due to sloppy challenges across the pitch. They have struggled to get to grips with Southampton today.
45' There will be five added minutes at the end of the first half, following the treatment both Wood and Boufal needed before going off.
B. Mee
Yellow Card
44' Mee earns himself a yellow for a rash challenge on Ings, who had dropped deep to pick up the ball and turned quickly past the defender before being hacked down.
41' Walker-Peters darts past McNeil with a quick piece of skill and earns a free-kick as the winger puts in a frustrated challenge.
M. Djenepo
S. Boufal
39' Boufal does now go off, with Djenepo coming on as a like-for-like replacement.
37' Boufal is down and appears to have tweaked something when crossing the ball for Long's earlier chance. He looks like he will have to come off.
36' WIDE! Boufal's deflected left-wing cross falls to Long at the back post, but the striker doesn't get a clean header away and can only nod past the post!
34' Southampton defend well as Vestergaard sticks out a long leg to deny Vydra, who thought he had been played through by Westwood, before Bertrand deals with a cross to the back post, hooking away from an arriving Burnley player.
33' Southampton press Burnley well and win the ball back high up on the right. However, Armstrong's cross is lacking in quality and the chance is wasted.
32' At the other end, Hendrick then thinks he's clean through on goal down the right, but the flag belatedly goes up. Southampton held a good line there to catch the midfielder off.
31' Vestergaard knocks the ball forward for Long in behind Burnley's high line, but the striker is just offside and the flag goes up.
29' Cork is very fortunate to escape without a booking as he lunges in on Ward-Prowse from behind, missing the ball completely and taking the man out.
27' CROSSBAR! Boufal crosses into the box following the free-kick and Stephens rises highest to meet it, but his glanced header pings back out off the face of the bar! Pope then gathers the loose ball under pressure.
J. Hendrick
Yellow Card
26' Boufal gets his body between the ball and Hendrick as he's first to a loose ball, and the Burnley midfielder eventually fells him, picking up a booking for his troubles.
24' Southampton have been by far the better side despite going behind and they look to be in the ascendancy now after levelling the scores. They've responded well to that early goal.
M. Vydra
C. Wood
22' Wood pulled up with what appears to be a hamstring complaint shortly before Burnley conceded and he is unable to continue. Vydra replaces him in support of Rodriguez.
20' Ings has scored 18 goals in all competitions this season – the last Southampton player to score more in a season with Saints as a top-flight club was James Beattie in 2002-03 (24). Additionally, Ings' last two Premier League goals have been from outside the box - whilst his first 34 were all from inside the area.
D. Ings
Goal
18' GOAL!! INGS FIRES SOUTHAMPTON LEVEL!! Determined to atone for his earlier mistake, the striker tries to back-heel into Long and it ricochets off Mee and back into his path. Ings then takes a touch, before firing a fierce, low drive from the edge of the box that just curls inside the bottom-right corner! It's 1-1!
17' McNeil gets away down the left and crosses into the box for Rodriguez, who finds a yard of space to nod at goal, but he can only loop tamely into the arms of McCarthy.
J. Vestergaard
Yellow Card
16' Vestergaard takes a loose touch as the hosts try to play their way out from the back and ends up felling Rodriguez after the Burnley man dispossessed him, picking up a yellow card.
15' Only Wolves (8) and Watford (7) have conceded more goals in the opening 15 minutes of Premier League games this season than Southampton (6).
13' Burnley toss the ball forward from a free-kick and Tarkowski ends up with it on the left. He tries to work a yard to cross but it's well-blocked and the visitors are forced backwards.
11' Southampton have been the better side since going behind, but the hosts are facing an uphill battle now as they try to put the earlier mistake from their minds.
9' Stephens goes on a driving run from inside his own half and makes it all the way to the byline on the left, where Bardsley is forced to hook the ball behind for another Saints corner.
7' BLOCK! Ward-Prowse cleverly steps over Long's pass inside from the right and allows it to run for Armstrong on the edge of the box, who takes a touch and fires at goal, but it's blocked behind by Tarkowski for a corner.
6' Southampton are pouring men forward as they desperately try to cancel out their early mishap, but Burnley have cleared everything the hosts can throw at them so far.
4' That goal - scored after one minute and 33 seconds - was Burnley's fastest ever away from home in the Premier League.
A. Westwood
Goal
2' GOAL!! WHAT A HOWLER!! BURNLEY ARE IN FRONT!! Westwood takes an inswinging corner from the left and Ings, at the near post, bizarrely decides to leave it and it crosses the goal-line before McCarthy clears it out! It's 1-0 to Burnley inside the first two minutes!
1' We're under way at St. Mary's!
Dyche's men are averaging 223 successful passes per game in the Premier League this season, fewer than any other side. It’s also the Clarets’ lowest in a single campaign in the competition.
Southampton are winless in their last six Premier League meetings with Burnley (D3 L3), failing to score on four occasions in that run. In addition, only league leaders Liverpool (11) have kept more Premier League clean sheets this season than the Clarets (9).
Meanwhile, Burnley boss Sean Dyche makes just one alteration from his side's 0-0 draw against Arsenal in their last game, as Bardsley replaces the injured Matthew Lowton at right-back. Ben Gibson, Ashley Barnes and Johan Berg Gudmundsson are also sidelined.
Southampton head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl makes four changes to the team that lost 3-2 against Tottenham in their FA Cup replay last time out. Gunn, Bednarek and Romeu drop to the bench, while Nathan Redmond is out with an injury. McCarthy, Walker-Peters, Vestergaard and Armstrong start in their places.
Burnley substitutes: Joe Hart, Aaron Lennon, Matej Vydra, Erik Pieters, Kevin Long, Robbie Brady, Josh Brownhill.
Burnley XI (4-4-2): Nick Pope; Phil Bardsley, James Tarkowski, Ben Mee, Charlie Taylor; Jeff Hendrick, Ashley Westwood, Jack Cork, Dwight McNeil; Jay Rodriguez, Chris Wood.
Southampton substitutes: Angus Gunn, Che Adams, Jan Bednarek, Moussa Djenepo, William Smallbone, Oriol Romeu, Michael Obafemi.
Southampton XI (4-4-2): Alex McCarthy; Kyle Walker-Peters, Jack Stephens, Jannick Vestergaard, Ryan Bertrand; Stuart Armstrong, James Ward-Prowse, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Sofiane Boufal; Shane Long, Danny Ings.
Southampton and Burnley are separated by goal-difference alone, and have a seven-point cushion between themselves and the relegation zone. Both sides will be hoping for a positive result to prevent them being sucked back into a relegation battle and perhaps even push for a top-half finish.
