Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Girona get off the mark in their first LaLiga match earning a point from the contest, although it could well have been all three. Cristhian Stuani put the home side into a 2-0 lead in the first half, while Atletico Madrid were reduced to 10 men when Antoine Griezmann was dismissed. The Frenchman's departure seemed to have ended hope for Diego Simeone's men, but goals from Angel Correa and Jose Gimenez earned them a valuable point on the road.
FULL-TIME: GIRONA 2-2 ATLETICO MADRID
Pere Pons
Yellow Card
90' + 4' Pons brings down Correa on the counter.
90' + 4' Girona hold firm from the last delivery into the box from the visitors as the referee blows the full-time whistle.
90' + 3' SAVE! Oblak saves his side a point with a miraculous stop. Kayode latches on to a low cross into the box and he steers the ball towards the net, only to be denied by a brilliant reaction stop from the Atletico keeper.
90' + 2' OVER! The home side's short-corner routine does not work out, but they still manage to get the ball into the box. The ball falls for Muniesa to strike on the volley, only sending his effort fractionally over the bar.
90' + 1' Girona press down the right flank and they win a corner as Kayode slams the ball off the legs of Hernandez.
90' There will be four minutes of added time.
89' WIDE! Garcia sends the ball for Alcala to strike first time, but the defender slices his effort well wide of the post. A wasted set-piece for the home side.
89' Kayode is brought down on the edge of the box by Gimenez. Every player from the home side stakes his claim to take the set-piece.
87' Atletico defend with character at the back as the home side attempt to respond through Granell's delivery, but the visitors clear their lines.
Koke
Assist
85' Koke puts the ball right on the money for Gimenez to attack and score.
J. Giménez
Goal
85' GOALLLLLLLLL!!!! ATLETICO ARE LEVEL!!!! Gimenez rises in the box to head Koke's cross past the on-rushing Iraizoz into the net. The keeper made a rash decision to leave his line and was beaten to the ball by the Atletico defender, who made no mistake with his headed effort. A fantastic comeback from the visitors after being reduced to 10 men.
O. Kayode
Portu
84' Portu makes way for Kayode for the home side.
84' Correa wins a free-kick down the left and the visitors have a chance to send a threatening cross into the box.
83' OVER! Carrasco slides the ball into the path of Vietto in the right inside channel. He goes high with his strike, but he can only send the ball over the bar.
82' Portu raids down the right flank and lifts a peach of a cross to the back post. Garcia and Pons wait at the back post waiting for the ball, but Oblak makes a vital punch to take it away from the midfielders.
80' BLOCK! Carrasco makes headway down the right flank and he cuts the ball back to the edge of the box. Gaitan is there, but he doesn't connect well enough with his strike, allowing Muniesa to block the ball.
Á. Correa
Goal
78' GOALLLLLL!!!! CORREA SCORES A STUNNER! Atletico have a lifeline in the contest as Correa rifles an effort into the top corner. The Argentine was allowed to run at the Girona defence and before he connected with his right-footed strike from the edge of the box that sailed past Iraizoz.
L. Hernández
Assist
78' Hernandez sends Correa on his way to score a stunning goal.
77' OVER! Granell finds space to turn in the final third and he goes for an ambitious strike at goal, only to smash his effort over the bar.
75' Vietto makes a surge into the left inside channel and hammers the ball across the face of goal. Iraizoz makes the save before Espinosa clears the danger away from the six-yard box.
74' Girona are very comfortable at the moment and are prepared just to sit back and absorb the presure from Atletico.
L. Vietto
Fernando Torres
73' Torres is replaced by Vietto for the final 17 minutes of the contest.
Planas
Aday
71' Aday makes way for Planas.
70' Any hope that Atletico had of getting back into the game has been extinguished. Griezmann had been frustrated all evening and his feelings got the better of him. That could be extremely costly to his side going forward in the early stages of the season.
N. Gaitán
Gabi
69' Gaitan replaces Gabi for the visitors.
A. Griezmann
Red Card
67' RED CARD! WOW! Griezmann has been dismissed not too dissimilar to Ronaldo's sending off in the Super Cup. He gets booked for diving in the box, although Iraizoz may have made contact. The Frenchman lets his feelings known to the referee and is then sent on his way, which appears to be a straight red card. Very poor discipline from Griezmann, even though the initial decision may have gone against him.
A. Griezmann
Yellow Card
67' DRAMA! Griezmann goes into the book for simulation as he goes down in the box under Iraizoz's challenge.
65' The home side test Oblak again with another threatening delivery from the wide area. Stuani makes a run across the keeper, but he makes the claim under the bar.
63' Hernandez treads a fine line as he brings down Portu on the right flank. He has to be very careful now.
L. Hernández
Yellow Card
61' Hernandez goes into the book for a foul on Stuani.
60' Atletico are trying to build a period of possession, but are not finding life easy in the final third. The home side are very well organised at the back.
Á. Correa
Juanfran
58' Highlighting that last point, Simeone has withdrawn Juanfran, who has been extremely poor this evening. Correa replaces him with a change of formation expected, with Hernandez sliding into the centre alongside Savic and Gimenez.
57' Atletico are struggling with Girona's intricate play into the inside channels on both flanks. It has produced a lot of threatening crosses into the box, either from open play or set-pieces.
56' Girona have not lost their intensity from the first period and are continuing to dominate when the ball becomes loose, which will infuriate Simeone.
54' SAVE! Saul attempts to clear the corner by heading away, but Muniesa meets the ball in turn and directs his header towards goal. Oblak is forced to leap across to his right to make the save, although it may have been travelling wide anyway.
53' Juanfran makes an error at the back and it allows Aday then Garcia to threaten down the flank. Girona win another corner to put the pressure on the visitors.
51' WIDE! Atletico come within an inch of getting back into the game as a loose defensive header from Alcala falls into the path of Griezmann. The Frenchman tries for the spectacular with an overhead kick, but his effort creeps just past the post with Iraizoz beaten.
Saúl
Yellow Card
50' Saul brings down Stuani on the break and goes into the book.
49' Atletico build down the right, but Juanfran's charge into the inside right channel is prevented by a fine tackle from Muniesa.
46' Straight from the restart Oblak is put under pressure as he is forced to clear his lines. The keeper shows good control to take the ball away from Stuani before Savic has to scamper it away from the box.
46' We're back underway in Girona.
The players are back out for the second half, so we should be underway shortly.
Girona could not have asked for a better start to life in LaLiga. Cristhian Stuani put them ahead in the 22nd minute with a well-placed header before notching his second with another close-range effort. Diego Simeone will be fuming with his Atletico Madrid players and will be demanding a response in the second half.
HALF-TIME: GIRONA 2-0 ATLETICO MADRID
45' + 2' The referee ends the first half.
45' + 2' Atletico pump one cross deep into the box to end the half, but the home side clear their lines with ease.
C. Stuani
Yellow Card
45' + 1' Stuani goes into the book for a loose challenge on Saul.
45' There will be one minute of added time.
43' Girona were inches away from a third goal there, with only Oblak's reach keeping them from an overwhelming advantage. Atletico have been all over the place at the back.
42' CHANCE! Maffeo's cross causes havoc in the box as Oblak is forced into a one-handed save. Stuani almost latches on to the rebound, but fails to connect with his overhead kick. Portu stabs the ball towards the bottom corner, but the Atletico keeper scrambles across to keep the ball out, pushing it off the line.
41' Hernandez makes a good run from deep into the box and Saul picks him out with a lofted ball over the top. The left-back attempts to head the ball across to Griezmann, but fails to connect.
39' Atletico are beginning to click into a rhythm in the final, with a better fluency to their passing game. However, the home side are defending extremely well thus far.
37' Girona have an appeal for a penalty turned down as Pons goes down in the box. Atletico break with speed with Griezmann and he runs the length of the pitch before sliding a pass to Carrasco, but the Belgian loses possession in a challenge with Espinosa.
35' The visitors probe in the final third, but have the clamps put down on them on the edge of the box. Carrasco tries to break the stalemate with a strike, but he scuffs his effort at Iraizoz, who saves with ease.
34' Alcala wins the ball in the air from the corner and Stuani along with Portu aim to capitalise, but this time the referee blows for a foul. Girona are first to every 50/50 at the moment, Simeone will be seething with his team.
33' Atletico are put under pressure once again and they can only concede a corner down the left, allowing the home side to send another threatening cross into the area.
31' The home side look like the team that have been challenging for the LaLiga crown for the past five years rather than Atletico. The yellow shirts are chasing shadows at the moment and when they have been in possession they've been unable to threaten Iraizoz.
29' Maffeo has a dart down the flank and almost gets the better of Hernandez, but the Atletico man holds his ground and wins a goal-kick for his team. Better from the visitors.
Y. Carrasco
Yellow Card
28' Carrasco catches Garcia in the face with a loose hand and goes into the book. Atletico's poor start continues.
27' Atletico had a poor start to the game, but Simeone would not have expected his defence to cave in so easily. Can Madrid respond before the break?
C. Stuani
Goal
25' GOALLLLLLLL!!!!!! STUANI NOTCHES HIS SECOND!!!!!  Girona are in dreamland. Stuani puts them 2-0 ahead against one of the division's elite sides. Atletico fail to clear their lines from the free-kick as Gimenez heads the ball back across his own six-yard box. Stuani - unmarked - pounces and nods the ball beyond the reach of Oblak. Stunning!
24' Girona win a free-kick down the left. Can they threaten again down the same flank?
Álex Granell
Assist
22' Granell lifts a fine cross into the box for Stuani to attack and he does not disappoint with a fine header.
C. Stuani
Goal
22' GOALLLLLLL!!!!! STUANI OPENS THE SCORING! Girona's impressive start is rewarded as Stuani notches their first goal in La Liga. The forward rose well above Savic at the back post to head Granell's cross down into the bottom corner, leaving Oblak with no chance. A fine header from the Uruguayan.
20' Atletico are not quite clicking in the play as of yet, but they can turn the switch in an instant.
18' Maffeo stops a move in process down the right with a loose piece of control, allowing the ball to head straight out for a throw-in. Girona can't afford mistakes like that.
16' Aday makes an impact down the left as weaves past Juanfran's challenge and sends a low ball into the box, but there's no team-mate there to capitalise.
14' OVER! Atletico click into gear as Griezmann and Saul exchange passes to allow the 22-year-old to surge forward. Saul goes for goal from 25 yards, but smashes his effort over the bar.
11' The tempo of the match has been very slow to begin with as both sides are attempting to feel each other out.
9' WIDE! Girona use the ball well in the final third once again and it allows Aday to fire at goal, but he places his effort narrowly wide of the post.
6' SHOT! Space opens up for Stuani in the final third and he goes for the strike, but can only drill his effort straight at Oblak.
4' The home side have come out well in the opening minutes of the match and are enjoying a steady spell of possession.
2' Granell lines up an ambitious strike from distance, but he gets his effort all wrong sending it miles wide of the post.
2' Aday makes progress down the left for the home side and he hits his cross towards the back post, but Savic is there to clear the danger.
1' We're underway in this LaLiga contest.
There will be a minute's silence for the victims of the Barcelona terror attacks.
The players are making their way out on to the pitch, so we should be underway shortly.
Atletico have a very familiar look, although Diego Godin is absent this evening. Jose Gimenez and Stefan Savic start in the heart of the defence flanked by Juanfran and Lucas Hernandez. The midfield is as expected, while Torres leads the line with Griezmann.
Machin hands debuts to new signings Bernardo Espinosa and Cristhian Stuani, who arrived from Middlesbrough. Marc Muniesa also starts following his arrival from Stoke, while Manchester City loanee Pablo Maffeo starts at right-back.
Atletico subs: Moya, Correa, Fernandez, Vrsaljko, Vietto, Gaitan, Sergi Gonzalez.
ATLETICO (4-4-2): Oblak; Juanfran, Gimenez, Savic, Hernandez; Koke, Saul, Gabi, Carrasco; Torres, Griezmann.
Girona subs: Moreno, Kayode, Bounou, Juanpe, Aleix Garcia, Douglas Luiz, Planas.
GIRONA (5-3-2): Iraizoz; Maffeo, Espinosa, Alcala, Muniesa, Aday; Garcia, Pons, Granell; Stuani, Portu.
The team news has been announced and we'll start with the home side.
Atletico finished third behind Real Madrid and Barcelona last season, and were well off the pace for the first time in a few years. The club's transfer ban has restricted new arrivals, with Vitolo being farmed out to Las Palmas until the end of December, leaving Diego Simeone with much of the same squad as last term.
Girona are embarking on their first campaign in the Spanish first division after winning promotion from the Segunda league last season, finishing second. Manager Pablo Machin will be keen for his side to make a strong impression in their first outing.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the LaLiga opening-day clash between Girona and Atletico Madrid at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi.
