Thank you for joining our Live Text Commentary between Everton and Huddersfield Town this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
FULL-TIME - EVERTON 2-0 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN - It's the perfect start for manager Sam Allardyce as Everton have defeated Huddersfield Town in his opening game in charge. It was an uninspiring first half from both sides, with neither creating much during the opening 45 minutes. Everton were by far the better team in the second half, however, and opened the scoring shortly after the break through Gylfi Sigurdsson after an inventive flick from Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The young English forward then doubled the scoreline midway through the half after being picked out by Wayne Rooney, before seeing his effort deflect over Jonas Lossl. The Toffees defended well and comfortably closed the game out, whilst David Wagner's Huddersfield extended their run of having not scored on the road since the opening game of the season.
90' The fourth official indicates that there will be three minutes of added time.
85' David Wagner will be disappointed with how today has gone for his side as they have had the bulk of possession throughout, but created very little during this contest. They need to turnaround their away form soon, otherwise they could get dragged into the relegation zone.
M. Keane
W. Rooney
80' Substitution - Wayne Rooney is withdrawn for Michael Keane as Sam Allardyce looks to close out the result in his first game in charge.
76' That could be it for Huddersfield in this contest given their poor form on the road this season. Leaving two strikers up the pitch for the remainder of this match gives them every opportunity of scoring a goal, however, which they need to do sooner rather than later.
W. Rooney
73' Assist - Wayne Rooney threaded a pass between two Huddersfield defenders to create the goalscoring opportunity.
D. Calvert-Lewin
73' GOOOAAALLL!!! EVERTON 2–0 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN – THE HOME SIDE DOUBLE THEIR ADVANTAGE – The hosts were defending but quickly won the ball back before breaking up the pitch. Wayne Rooney carried it forward and threaded an intricate through pass to Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The striker drove towards goal and took a shot, which deflected off Mathias Jorgensen and over Jonas Lossl into the net.
S. Mounié
S. Malone
71' Substitution - Scott Malone departs for Steve Mounie. David Wagner has withdrawn a defender for a striker ahead of the final 20 minutes in this match.
A. Lookman
A. Lennon
71' Substitution - Aaron Lennon, who has been superb this afternoon, departs for Ademola Lookman.
69' Everton look like a completely different side this half, with their players using the ball well and taking more risks which they haven't done so far this season. It's remarkable that this set of players have performed so poorly in this campaign given the talent and spark they have shown this afternoon.
M. Schneiderlin
T. Davies
66' Substitution - Tom Davies departs for Morgan Schneiderlin. Sam Allardyce is clearly thinking more defensively here as we approach the final quarter of this contest.
63' GOOD SAVE! Dominic Calvert-Lewin was given the ball in space outside Huddersfield's 18-yard box, before firing a shot towards goal which was parried around the post by Jonas Lossl.
61' Scott Malone wins a corner for the away side after a defensive block from Aaron Lennon. The resulting corner from Mooy was poor as it failed to beat the first man, with his second cross also being blocked by an opposition player. What a waste from Huddersfield, who need to utilise these opportunities in the remainder of this match.
59' Half a chance for the away side, who are patient around Everton's box by moving the ball from right to left. It eventually fell into the path of Ince, who unleashed a volley from outside the 18-yard box which flew over the bar.
56' Huddersfield continue to dominate possession but appear to lack a clinical edge as they are not making the most of the ball when they have it.
53' The goal has given Everton a lot of confidence in this match, as they charge forward in search of a second. Rooney, Sigurdsson and Calvert-Lewin combine well with some intricate passing, but the latter sees his final pass evade every Everton player resulting in the move breaking down.
50' It's going to be an uphill task for Huddersfield now, who will have to score their first away goal since the opening game of the season to get back into this contest.
G. Sigurðsson
47' GOOOAAALLL!!! EVERTON 1–0 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN – WHAT A START TO THE HALF FOR THE HOME SIDE – Aaron Lennon makes a burst from the right-hand touchline and drifts past his man, before playing a pass into Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The English forward produce a superb flick to unlock the Huddersfield defence and find Gylfi Sigurdsson, who made no mistake with his finish inside the box by finding the bottom left-hand corner.
D. Calvert-Lewin
47' Assist - Dominic Calvert-Lewin's flick created a chance out of nothing for the home side. Brilliant skill from the young forward!
K. Palmer
C. Quaner
46' Substitution - Collin Quaner is replaced by Kasey Palmer for David Wagner's side.
46' Everton kick off the second half and are now attacking from right to left in their traditional blue home kit.
HALF-TIME - EVERTON 0-0 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN - The opening 45 minutes ends in a stalemate at Goodison Park. Everton had more territory and chances in the first half, but Huddersfield had more possession and were the better side as the break approached.
45' There will be three minutes of added time.
44' There is a delay in play as Mathias Jorgensen receives treatment.
42' Huddersfield are having more joy in this contest as we approach half time, with Everton failing to put together a meaningful attack. Aaron Lennon picked out Gylfi Sigurdsson with a good cross from the right-hand touchline, but the midfielders touch let him down before the away side cleared it to safety.
40' CHANCE! Huddersfield win a free kick in a dangerous position to the left-hand side of Everton's 18-yard box. The initial delivery from Aaron Mooy was headed away by Mason Holgate for a corner, but the visitors nearly scored from the resulting set-piece. Tom Ince curled the ball in from the right-hand side, resulting in chaos in Everton's box as it pinballed around. Laurent Depoitre eventually guided the ball towards goal, but it was met by Jordan Pickford.
38' There has been a lack of goalmouth action in the last 10 minutes as both teams exchange possession of the ball. Wayne Rooney is becoming frustrated and is starting to drop very deep to receive possession.
35' There is a delay in play as Christopher Schindler and Dominic Calvert-Lewin receive treatment for a clash of heads.
34' STAT: Everton have only lost one of their last 20 Premier League clashes with newly-promoted clubs.
32' Huddersfield have a good attacking spell but fail to create a meaningful opportunity from their pressure. It's important for David Wagner's players to have these spells so they take the sting out this contest and to relieve some pressure.
29' Everton are increasing their dominance in this contest and are flowing forward at every opportunity. The crowd are responding positively to their increase in tempo, which has trapped Huddersfield inside their defensive half.
27' CHANCE! Cuco Martina plays a swift one-two with Calvert-Lewin before unleashing a curling strike from outside the box which nearly opens the scoring for Everton, but his effort was parried wide by Jonas Lossl.
T. Davies
Yellow Card
24' Another booking! Tom Davies deservedly sees yellow for a crunching challenge on Kachunga, who is in the wars here.
J. Kenny
Yellow Card
23' The set-piece came to nothing and Jonjoe Kenny enters the ref's notebook for preventing Elias Kachunga from leading a counter-attack.
S. Malone
Yellow Card
22' Malone picks up the game's first yellow for a cynical trip on Lennon as the winger cut inside and advanced towards the penalty area.
20' BLOCK! Wayne Rooney, scorer of that remarkable goal against the Hammers, has had a speculative shot blocked and then led with an elbow in an aerial challenge with Scott Malone as he contested the rebound. The referee whistles for a free kick.
18' The Everton fans haven't had much to shout about this season, until their big win over West Ham last time out, but normal service has resumed today. They've barely had a sniff in the final third so far.
16' Collin Quaner had an opportunity to cross from the touchline down the right there, but hooked the ball somewhat clumsily out of play.
15' The Terriers are controlling possession and probing for weaknesses, with Mooy spreading it wide to Tom Ince and Tommy Smith down the right, although nothing comes of that attack.
14' The high press being employed by David Wagner's visitors is putting Everton's backline under considerable pressure, although they're yet to properly breach the home side's defence for a clear opportunity.
12' Huddersfield are looking to Aaron Mooy to pull the strings for them here but the Australian international has been unable to conjure anything up just yet.
6' STAT: None of the previous seven permanent Everton managers in the Premier League lost their first game in the competition.
2' STAT: This is Everton and Huddersfield’s first league meeting since April 1972, which also means it’s the first Premier League match between them in history.
1' Referee Chris Kavanagh blows his whistle and we’re off!
The teams walk out of the tunnel to the Z-Cars anthem and a loud reception from the Goodison Park crowd. All eyes are on Sam Allardyce, who is being introduced to the supporters for the first time. The game will begin shortly.
David Wagner has made five changes from Huddersfield’s last encounter with Tommy Smith, Scott Malone, Danny Williams, Tom Ince and Laurent Depoitre coming into the starting eleven.
Sam Allardyce has made no changes to the Everton side who beat West Ham on Wednesday.
Huddersfield Town substitutes: Hogg, Cranie, Lowe, Mounie, Green, Hadergjonaj, Palmer.
Huddersfield Town XI (4-2-3-1): Lossl; Smith ©, Jorgensen, Schindler, Malone; Mooy, Williams; Kachunga, Ince, Quaner; Depoitre.
Everton substitutes: Schneiderlin, Keane, Niasse, Vlasic, Lookman, Robles, Baningime.
Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Kenny, Holgate, Williams, Martina; Davies, Gueye; Lennon, Rooney ©, Sigurdsson; Calvert-Lewin.
There’s just over 15 minutes to go until kick off, so let’s reveal how the two teams line up…
HEAD TO HEAD: In the past five meetings Everton have won two of the contests, whilst the other three games have ended in draws.
This is Everton and Huddersfield’s first meeting since a League Cup tie in 2010. The Terriers were defeated 5-1 that day, but were in League One which shows how far they have come in the seven years since.
Huddersfield haven’t won or, more worryingly, scored on the road since their opening day victory against Crystal Palace. This record continued on Wednesday as they lost 5-0 against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. They are still five points clear from safety after an impressive start to the season, but David Wagner’s side need to start picking up points to ensure they don’t get dragged into the relegation battle.
It was the perfect performance from Everton on Wednesday, who brushed aside West Ham by four goals to nil to move further away from the relegation zone. This coincided with the appointment of Sam Allardyce, who has become the Toffees new manager after the club sacked Ronald Koeman over a month ago. They will hope to put together a good run in the Premier League starting this afternoon against a Huddersfield side who have struggled on their travels this season.
This is Everton’s first match under new manager Sam Allardyce, whilst Huddersfield will be aiming to bounce back from a heavy midweek defeat against Arsenal.
