Commentary

That is it for tonight, goodbye!
With both sides now safe with one game to play their managers will be starting to think about next season. Brighton will be wanting to go out with a bang against Burnley whilst Newcastle take on champions Liverpool and will be hoping to pull of a big upset for their fans.
That point now means that Brighton are officially safe and will be playing in the Premier League next season. With neither side playing for much today the game predictably lacked much fizz or attacking threat. Despite that, there were still a fair few heavy collissions out there and Newcastle will probably feel like they should have taken one of their chances in the second half with Almiron and Carroll both coming close.
90' + 5' FULL TIME: BRIGHTON 0-0 NEWCASTLE
90' + 5' A final ball is pumped into the Brighton box but Carroll is penalised for a foul as it came in.
90' + 4' Both sides are now resorting to longer balls and it seems unlikely that there is a goal in this one.
90' + 2' Carroll wins a header and is demanding a corner but the referee's given a goal-kick. I think that did take a deflection to be fair to Carroll.
90' It's a really hopeful shot from Shelvey on a difficult angle but he's won a corner. Can Carroll strike this time?
88' A nice touch from Joelinton as he brings down a ball to keep Newcastle's attack alive.
A. Webster
Yellow Card
87' Unfortunate one as Webster follows through on a pass and catches Rose. It's a yellow card for him.
86' What a chance! The corner is hit long to the back post and Carroll heads down and wide from a couple yards out. That would have been a Carroll classic!
V. Lazaro
M. Almirón
86' Lazaro is on for Almiron.
S. Duffy
T. Lamptey
86' Anticipating the aerial duels Potter replaces Lamptey with Duffy.
84' Newcastle win a corner. With their big men this could be a really good chance to score.
83' Lamptey shows his pace as he covers quick ground to shut down a Newcastle counter-attack.
82' If Newcastle were to steal a winner today it would be their first ever Premier League victory against Brighton (at the sixth attempt).
81' Shelvey hits a clever ball forward which Joelinton gets on to before winning a throw. Newcastle are slowly creeping into Brighton's half.
79' For the first time in a while Newcastle are stringing together some passes of their own. Shelvey is looking positive on the ball.
77' The first long ball comes into Carroll. Him and Joelinton are giving the Brighton defence something new to think about and their movement looks sharp.
76' What a hit! Webster unleashes a ferocious swerving shot which Dubravka nearly misjudges but he is able to push it wide.
75' It is very interesting to see Carroll and Joelinton playing together. Joelinton thrived with an attacking partner next to him at Hoffenheim so perhaps this will benefit him...
Joelinton
A. Saint-Maximin
74' Joelinton is also on for Saint-Maximin. Newcastle have got some big men up top now.
A. Carroll
D. Gayle
74' Carroll is now on for Gayle.
D. Pröpper
Y. Bissouma
73' Bissouma comes off for Propper. He's had a good game today.
G. Murray
N. Maupay
73' Maupay is replaced by Murray.
71' Chance! Maupay manufactures himself some space in the box and slams a shot which is deflected out for a corner. That could have gone anyhere.
70' Rose, who is playing as a centre-half today, is starting to make some useful overlapping runs forward. Are Newcastle going for it a bit?
69' Play resumes and Almiron is brought down by Lamptey but the referee doesn't see a foul.
67' The players now pause for the halfway drinks break.
66' Chance! Ritchie and Rose link beautifully on the left-hand side as Ritchie's glancing shot just drifts too far across goal.
65' Almiron's persistance wins his side a foul deep in the Brighton half.
64' Bisoumma has won possession eight times today. He's really enjoyed the scrappy side of things in that midfield.
64' March takes on Ritchie and wins his team a corner.
D. Rose
Yellow Card
63' Rose has made a few heavy tackles today and this one on MacAllister has got him a yellow card.
60' Krafth's block of Maupay's shot was fully committed and both players have stayed down with the team doctors on. They look okay to carry on though.
59' Webster does really well to carry the ball forward and create space. The ball eventually falls to Maupay whose shot is blocked by Krafth.
S. March
A. Mooy
58' Mooy is replaced by March in midfield.
A. Mac Allister
P. Groß
58' Gross comes off for MacAllister who should bring a more attacking threat.
56' There's another big collision which sees Manquillo come worse off. He is limping a little but looks okay to continue.
55' Rose goes in hard on Gross and is lucky it's just a foul. This game has had a fair few hefty challenges.
53' Is that Andy Carroll warming up? This could be his kind of game.
51' Whenever Brighton do go more direct the Newcastle defenders seem so confident winning aerial dues. Ritchie does just that, outmuscling Lamptey.
50' Chance! The ball is squeezed to Almiron inside the box and he instinctively flicks it towards goal but Dubravka does well to save.
49' Newcastle win a free-kick and Ritchie absolutely fizzes one across the Brighton goal but there just aren't any willing forwards in the box.
48' Ritchie knocks a ball down the line to find Saint-Maximin in a bit of space but his attempted cross is poor and cut out.
47' Gayle makes a mess of an easy headed chance and he will be grateful to see he's been flagged offside.
D. Stephens
Yellow Card
46' Gayle flicks the ball beyond Stephens who brings him down for a yellow.
45' The second half is underway at the Amex Stadium!
As it stands, though, Brighton are certain to stay in the Premier League for another season. Can Newcastle change that?
No goals from either side so far in a game that perhaps expectedly lacked any real bite. Brighton have enjoyed the lion's share of posession and have come closer with chances falling to Gross and Maupay, whilst Newcastle's attack only came to life in the final five minutes with Gayle rising to head wide. I imagine both managers will be telling their players to improve.
45' + 4' HALF-TIME: BRIGHTON 0-0 NEWCASTLE
45' + 4' Brilliant defending from Newcastle as they clear consecutive balls in with two powerful headers.
45' + 3' And now Brighton win a corner at the other end. Surely this is the last chance in this half to strike.
45' + 2' Big chance! Shelvey whips in a corner and Gayle comes flying in to head it just over the bar. He couldn't quite get on top of that one but it was a great leap.
45' + 2' It's all Newcastle in the final minutes of this half as they win a corner.
45' That's the closest Newcastle have got so far as Saint-Maximin drives into the box drawing in defenders. The ball then squirts away and luckily falls to Lamptey who is eventually able to clear.
44' Four minutes of added time are signalled. Can one of these teams break the deadlock before the break?
42' Some industrial work from Mooy in midfield as he wins the ball and spreads it to Lamptey. The youngster's cross is far too heavy as it goes out for a goal-kick.
40' Whenever Saint-Maximin gets on the ball Bissouma latches onto him straight away. He's doing an effective man-marking job out there so far.
39' Ouch! Rose goes in for a tackle and lands very awkwardly, hurting his neck in the process. He briefly comes off but is now returning to the field of play.
37' The fact that Dunk has played the most passes this game (a whopping 40!) says plenty about where this game has been played so far.
35' Defensively Newcastle are structured in a very organised way. Their midfield and defence form two flat lines and Brighton are struggling to break them down.
34' Burn thumps a hopeful ball forward and it is straight down Dubravka's throat. Is it going to take some indvidual brilliance to set this game alight?
33' Both sides have lacked precision so far but Brighton certainly look the more likely team to score. Newcastle have failed to register a single shot on target.
32' Trossard has shown little flashes of class so far today as he nutmegs Krafth which leads to a corner.
M. Ritchie
Yellow Card
31' Ritchie flies into a tackle on Lamptey, missing the ball and taking out the man. The referee gives him a yellow card straight away.
29' Unsurprisingly, Graham Potter's ball playing Brighton have enjoyed 69% of the possession so far.
27' Big chance! Ritchie spends far too long on the ball inside his box and has his pocket pinched by Maupay. The Frenchman loses his balance before getting off a shot and it's a really good parry by Dubravka.
26' Bissouma is back on the pitch after that injury.
P. Groß
Yellow Card
25' Gross is going for a header and catches Rose with a flailing arm to pick up a yellow card.
24' The players pause briefly for drinks.
23' Bissouma has come off badly from that challenge on Saint-Maximin and a team doctor is taking him off the pitch to have a look.
Y. Bissouma
Yellow Card
22' Bissouma comes in to Saint-Maximin from behind in the middle of the park and picks up a yellow card. That's the first kind of spark this game has seen so far.
19' Decent enough chance! Trossard does really well to beat his man and set up Gross on the corner of the box. His shot is hit well enough but it is bending the wrong way and flys past the post.
18' Saint-Maximin appears to be playing in behind the striker today. Bruce has tended to play him out wide this season and it will be interesting to see if this central role will unlock his natural creativity.
17' Some lovely trickery from Saint-Maximin as he picks up the ball between the lines. Ritchie is then fouled on the flank and it's a Newcastle free-kick.
16' Webster opts for a change of style as he hits a long ball forward to Maupay but it is well defended by this makeshift Newcastle back three.
14' A bobbling ball finds Trossard towards the back of the box and his attempted volley sails into the stands. He saw the headlines with that one.
13' A silly foul by Ritchie on Lamptey as the young Brighton defender slips past him and now Brighton have a free-kick in a dangerous position.
11' Dunk gets a headed chance at goal from the free-kick but it's a difficult one to generate any real power from and Dubravka collects comfortably.
10' Webster slips a ball through for Webster who is brought down by Bentaleb for a foul. Free-kick for Brighton.
9' Newcastle are getting quite a bit of joy down the right flank with Manquillo a willing runner.
7' Newcastle string together a really nice attacking move but the final cross from Manquillo is poor.
5' It looks as though Newcastle will actually be playing with a back three today. Rose is playing as part of that defensive unit which will be a new experience for him.
4' Newcastle are getting themselves on the ball for the first time this game. Krafth is then brought down by Maupay for a foul as he looks to hit the ball long.
3' Brighton win a corner which falls kindly to Maupay and his quick shot hits the post but it has been called offside.
2' It's lovely weather at the Amex Stadium as Brighton's defence quickly starts knocking the ball around inside their own half.
1' And we're underway!
The players are emerging from the tunnel and kick off is just moments away!
Although neither side tonight are in great form, Brighton have won just two of their past 16 league fixtures. Can they find a result tonight?
Graham Potter rings three changes from his side’s recent draw to Southampton as Bissouma and Gross come in for Propper and March in midfield. Midfielder Mooy also comes in for frontman Murray which could signal a slight change of shape for Brighton in this game. There are only two changes for Newcastle this time as Manquillo and Rose come into defence, replacing Yedlin and the injured Schar.
NEWCASTLE SUBS: Karl Darlow, Andy Carroll, Joelinton, Yoshinori Muto, DeAndre Yedlin, Valentino Lazaro, Christian Atsu, Mathew Longstaff, Kelland Watts.
NEWCASTLE (4-2-3-1): Martin Dubravka; Javier Manquillo, Emil Krafth, Federico Fernandez, Danny Rose; Nabil Bentaleb, Jonjo Shelvey; Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron, Matt Ritchie; Dwight Gayle.
BRIGHTON SUBS: David Button, Shane Duffy, Alexis MacAllister, Glenn Murray, Solly March, Martin Montoya, Davy Propper, Aaron Connolly, Alex Cochrane.
BRIGHTON (4-2-3-1): Matt Ryan; Tariq Lamptey, Adam Webster, Lewis Dunk, Daniel Burn; Yves Bissouma, Dale Stephens; Pascal Gross, Leandro Trossard, Aaron Mooy; Neal Maupay.
Any kind of result for Brighton tonight will ensure they are mathematically guaranteed another season of Premier League football. Although their healthy goal difference almost guarantees them safety anyway, Graham Potter will be eager to make it certain. Meanwhile Newcastle, who are already safe, have lost their last three games and their fans will want to make sure such a promising season under Steve Bruce does not come to an anti-climactic end.
Hello everyone and welcome to live text coverage of the Premier League, as Brighton and Newcastle go head to head.
