Shots Off Target
Shots On Target
These two teams meet again in Madrid in three weeks' time then. With Atalanta needing to attack in the second leg, let's hope it's a better game than this one turned out to be. That's all for now. Goodbye!
Madrid will of course be happy with taking a one-goal lead home, but given the circumstances it's hard not to feel that they should have worked harder to kill this tie off. Atalanta didn't muster a shot on target but still have something to play for after refusing to get blown away. That will buoy Gasperini's men greatly.
Real Madrid secure an unconvincing first-leg win against an Atalanta side who were down to 10 men for over 70 minutes. Zidane's men got the job done in the end thanks to Mendy's late goal but they didn't exactly set the world alight. Atalanta will have to score in Madrid to progress.

FULL-TIME: ATALANTA 0-1 REAL MADRID

Courtois comes off his line to punch the free-kick away and that's that!
90' + 2'
Atalanta will be glad to have kept this tie alive although their winless run at home in Europe this season looks set to continue. The hosts get the chance to test Courtois as Arribas fouls Gosens down the left.
There'll be three minutes of added time, and Atalanta almost concede a second goal! Vazquez's low cross finds its way to Mariano whose shot from the centre of the box is desperately blocked. Atalanta eventually manage to scramble it away.
Atalanta need to be careful not to let the tie slip away from them after all their hard work in this game. Casemiro fires wide from over 35 yards out.
Modric has been one of Madrid's brighter players here and the Croatian veteran looks to have made the difference for his team again. Atalanta will be disappointed to have conceded so late after surviving this long with 10 men.
Atalanta bring on fresh legs for the final minutes. The hardworking Maehle is replaced by the Argentine centre-back Palomino.
GOAL! ATALANTA 0-1 REAL MADRID! Madrid finally break Atalanta's resistance after having a man advantage for 70 minutes. Mendy curls a wonderful effort into the bottom right corner from outside the box from a Modric pass. It's the Frenchman's first Champions League goal.
Atalanta make another interesting change. Malinovskyi replaces the substitute Ilicic who must have taken a knock of some kind.
Vazquez wins a free-kick down the right as he's brought down by Pasalic. The free-kick comes in and it leads to a Madrid corner. There'll be changes first.
If Madrid fail to win despite Freuler's 17th minute dismissal, it will be the earliest a team has held a man advantage due to a red card and failed to go on to win in Champions League history. Zidane's team have about five minutes to fix that.
Mendy can't get around the outside of Maehle. The Dane tracked Mendy's run magnificently. Atalanta's discipline since going down to 10 men has been brilliant.
Casemiro takes a little push in the back from Pasalic and throws himself to the ground far too late. The referee decides not to book him for simulation as he's already on a yellow card.
Atalanta can't completely clear their lines and Duro's impulsive shot is blocked. Gasperini's team are 10 minutes away from a creditable draw.
The whole of this second half has been a countdown for Atalanta. At the moment the hosts will get what they're waiting for as Kroos thumps a speculative effort at goal from way out.
Duro is the next youngster to come on for Madrid. He takes the place of Isco.
Zidane decides to see what the kids can do to break down this stubborn Atalanta defence. The 19-year-old midfielder Arribas replaces the quiet Asensio.
We're entering the final 15 minutes and Atalanta are managing to hold firm. Madrid look short of ideas as Modric bounces an effort wide from distance.
A handball by Vazquez gives Atalanta the rare opportunity to threaten from a set-piece. It doesn't work out and Atalanta stay in Madrid's half. Ilicic goes down in the final third but doesn't get the free-kick.
Asensio takes the free-kick which is in a dangerous central position for Atalanta. It's at a comfortable height for Gollini who manages to stop it.
Vazquez takes down Kroos' crossfield pass and darts inside, drawing a bad challenge from Gosens. Gosens is booked for it.
Djimsiti's sliding tackle nicks the ball off Vazquez and earns Atalanta a throw-in for good measure. Madrid haven't played quickly enough to trouble Atalanta for the past few minutes.
Kroos' fizzed ball in is cut out and Atalanta once again cross halfway. Kroos is penalised for catching Pasilic with a high foot.
Djimsiti shows his strength against Isco, muscling the midfielder off the ball to let it roll out of play for an Atalanta goal-kick. It's sturdy defending by the Albanian centre-back.
Modric flicks a half-volley towards goal with the outside of his foot. It's surprisingly powerful but goes harmlessly over. Atalanta will be glad if they can restrict Madrid to chances like that.
De Roon gets a free-kick for Atalanta as Modric slides in. The hosts enjoy a brief period of respite - they've had to defend pretty much since the start of the half.
Atalanta manage to get forward briefly as Gosens wins a throw-in. The hosts can't do anything with it though and Madrid resume their control.
Mariano's first contribution to the game is an unfair challenge on Gosens. Atalanta welcome the free-kick as a chance to push their defence up.
Here's that Madrid change. Mariano, Madrid's only option on the bench with any real Champions League experience, replaces Vinícius.
Madrid win yet another corner as Kroos' shot from distance takes a nick on the way through. Before it's taken, Madrid will make a change.
Atalanta substitution. Muriel's relieved of his thankless task of working alone up front. Ilicic comes on to start his shift.
Mendy gets a yellow card for bringing de Roon down as the hosts look to get out of their half.
Atalanta clear Madrid's latest corner. This is going to be a long second half for the boys from Bergamo at this rate.
Gosens denies Vinicius a certain goal! Madrid work the ball to the Brazilian who's free inside the six-yard box. Gosens sticks out a leg and diverts Vinicius' instinctive effort over the bar. It's attack versus defence at the moment.
Toloi makes a heroic horizontal header over his own crossbar to stop Vinicius tapping in Modric's cross at the far post. Madrid have another corner.
Atalanta are trying to force Madrid out wide, knowing they've got the middle packed. Toloi makes a good header at the near post to clear Vazquez's cross.
Djimsiti gets a free-kick in his own box as he takes an accidental kick off Vazquez.
Modric finds space to shoot in the box. It takes a deflection off Maehle to roll excruciatingly slowly just wide of the left post. It's a Madrid corner which Atalanta clear.
Atalanta get us going again for the second half. No changes at half-time.
Atalanta are usually a second half team. 70% of their goals in the Champions League group stage this season came in the second half, the highest percentage of the 16 teams left in the competition. The red card changes things though. If the hosts can hold Madrid to a draw or a narrow defeat here, they'll still be in with a chance in the second leg in Madrid. Gasperini would probably take that.
This hasn't been the goalfest we were perhaps expecting but it's intriguing nonetheless. Atalanta and Madrid go in goalless at the break with the biggest incident of the first half being Freuler's red card. Madrid have grown in strength since then but Atalanta have coped admirably in the face of adversity so far.

HALF-TIME: ATALANTA 0-0 REAL MADRID
45' + 1'
Madrid get a big chance on the brink of half-time! Vinicius is fouled down the left by Toloi. Kroos' ball in finds Casemiro in the centre of the box. Casemiro heads towards goal but Gollini makes a great save to keep him out.
There'll be at least three minutes of additional time in this first half.
After no shots in the match prior to Atalanta's red card Madrid have have seven to Atalanta's two now. Only one of Madrid's has been on target though. Atalanta have responded very well to going a man down.
Atalanta think they have a penalty as Muriel goes down in the box under Vazquez's challenge. Play continues until Madrid put the ball with both players still down. VAR takes a silent look at the challenge and decides not to revisit it.
Muriel receives a pass to feet from Djimsiti and swivels a shot wide of the left-hand post. Atalanta are still getting forward when they can.
Madrid are upping the pressure. The visitors keep the ball from the corner. Modric sends it back towards Asensio whose tame header is claimed by Gollini.
Chance for Madrid! Vinicius has the goal at his mercy as Atalanta's defence opens up. The hosts make a crucial block to deny the Brazilian. Madrid get another corner.
Isco rolls the ball wide left for Modric who fizzes in a low return cross. Isco twists away from Toloi to get the shot away. It deflects off the Brazilian and out for a corner. From it Modric blazes well over from distance.
Gollini quickly gathers in the box as Madrid embark upon their latest attack. Atalanta are going to have to stay switched on all game.
Madrid are starting to dominate possesson now as they look to make the most of their one-man advantage. Asensio looks frustrated as his crossfield pass floats out of play.
Atalanta are playing a 3-4-1-1 now with Muriel the lone striker up front. That'll limit their attacking ambition but they've recovered well from the red card for now.
Zapata is the player to make way as Atalanta fix their midfield. It's a shame for the Colombian who's given Madrid something to think about during his short time on the pitch. The Croatian central midfielder Pasalic comes on.
It looks like Atalanta are preparing a substitution. They won't last long with that gaping hole in their midfield following Freuler's dismissal.
We've yet to have a shot on target in this game. It's somewhat surprising given the attack-minded sides these two teams have put out. This is still an absorbing game so far though.
Atalanta appear to be playing an ambitious 3-3-1-2 for now. Nacho ventures down the left and fires a shot or what could be a cross towards goal from the edge of the box. Either way it fails to find one of his Madrid teammates.
Casemiro's booked for bringing down Zapata. Madrid will now be without the Brazilian in the second leg of this tie.
Chance for Atalanta! Gosens' cross from the left finds his opposite counterpart Maehle who drags his shot wide to the left from the centre of the box.
Freuler is the first Swiss player to be sent off in the Champions League knockout phase and the first Atalanta player to see red in the competition. They're not records he'll look back on fondly. His dismissal may have been slightly harsh but there's no question that Mendy could have tested Gollini at least from that position.
How will 10-man Atalanta handle Madrid now? The hosts survive for now as Isco curls his free-kick into the defensive wall and Vazquez fires over on the rebound.
RED CARD FOR ATALANTA! Madrid put together some wonderful one-touch football to send Mendy free down the middle. Freuler brings him down and the referee immediately brandishes a red card! It's an obvious scoring opportunity so the Swiss midfielder has to go.
Varane heads Muriel's corner out. The offside flag goes up against Zapata shortly after.

Vinicius draws a foul from Toloi just to the left of the box after showing some great feet. Madrid will get their first attacking set-piece of the game.
Madrid keep the ball for a while. Modric is unable to find a way through Atalanta's back three but the visitors still have possession.
Atalanta put together a lovely move down their left and keep the ball in play on the opposite side. Maehle fires towards Muriel who's attacking the far post but Vazquez wins the header.
Madrid clear the free-kick away. Atalanta are fearless going forward so Madrid had better get used to dealing with the hosts in their half.
Zapata fizzes a cross towards Pessina who chests it down. Atalanta get a free-kick down their right as Casemiro fouls their Danish wing-back Maehle.
Madrid get this tie underway!
The two teams come out onto the pitch for Bergamo's first ever Champions League knockout game as the competition's eternally stirring anthem parps out. Don't you just love Champions League nights?
Madrid have a good record away to Italian sides, winning each of their last five visits to Italy. The Spaniards have found the net in each of their last 19 games against Italian opponents. Atalanta have yet to win a home game in the Champions League this season, and none of their 15 Champions League games has ended goalless. This should be a lot of fun.
Atalanta name the same 11 that demolished Napoli 4-2 here in Serie A a few days ago. Injury-hit Madrid are down to the bare bones, naming just eight substitutes. Zidane makes just one change to the team that beat Real Valladolid last time out as Isco comes in for Mariano.
