Wilfried Zaha remains Crystal Palace’s top man

Despite the emergence of Michael Olise at Selhurst Park and Conor Gallagher thriving on his loan spell, Zaha more or less retained his spot as the side’s most important player, outscoring every teammate.

The wide attacker looked to enjoy himself under Patrick Vieira’s management of the side and thrived in a different approach from the Eagles.

However, the Ivory Coast international is entering the final year of his contract and may not renew owing to his long-standing desire to play at a higher level.

    The story of last season

Zaha’s 14 Premier League goals saw him set a personal best, outdoing the previous year’s haul of 11 under Vieira.

Even though the side operated under a different on-field strategy, the Ivorian flourished and did not shirt responsibility with Olise and Gallagher also pulling their weight.

While he may have netted more goals from open play in the 2018/19 campaign, last year saw the 29-year-old show impressive sharp-shooting in the final third to outdo his expected goals by a significant distance.

With the national team, Zaha featured sparingly as the Elephants exited the Africa Cup of Nations at the Round of 16.

    Any transfer rumours?

While reports of a move away from South London have been few and far between since his failed move to Arsenal and Everton in the summer of 2019, interested parties could swoop for the attacker who has 12 months to run on his current deal.

With the Toffees losing Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur this week, perhaps Frank Lampard’s men could return for the Palace man.

Indeed, the best-case scenario for Palace supporters would be a renewal of their talisman’s contract whereas a transfer away from the club will be a kick in the teeth.

    One big hope for 2022/23

For Palace fans, undoubtedly renewing his contract at his boyhood club will be a huge positive for the season.

As for individual pursuits, the former Manchester United winger will strike to outdo his return in the previous campaign and hit double figures in goals for the third season running, having netted 11 and 14 league goals respectively in the last two campaigns.

    One big fear for 2022/23

Avoiding a repeat of an underwhelming season where he netted only four Premier League goals and even appeared to lose his role as the team’s talisman to Jordan Ayew.

The lockdown at the emergence of the pandemic did not help the 29-year-old’s form and he netted only one strike after Project Restart following the extended hiatus.

For Palace supporters, departing the club he’s represented for 12 seasons will fill them with dread as the possibility draws closer.

    GOAL’s prediction for 2022/23

On an individual note, we are backing the forward to hit double figures in the Premier League yet again for a third season on the trot.

However, supporters are not going to get their wish with the attacker likely to avoid an extension in the hope of

For the Ivory Coast, GOAL predicts a positive run for the wideman in the national team after making do with a peripheral role for the Elephants at Afcon as they seek a strong run on home soil next year.
