The Ghanaian international believes that the Old Lady has the best midfield in Europe and hopes to prove the club's Champions League ambitions in the Guinness ICC tournament.Juventus has dominated Italy for two straight years, winning two Serie A titles and even going undefeated in 2011-12.
Now, after the team has recruited Carlos Tevez, Fernando Llorente and Angelo Ogbonna, midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah believes Juventus can dream a bit bigger. The 24-year-old is hoping that the Turin-based club will become a serious contender for the Champions League title this year.
"I think with everything that we've done this offseason, adding new players, increasing our training methods, our expectations are very high," Asamoah told Goal in a phone interview. "We want to again be the top team in the championship of Italy and we want to do better in the Champions League. I think that's our main objective this season."
Juventus reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League last year in large part thanks to its strong midfield, which some have called the most dominant in Europe. Asamoah agrees with the positive reviews and thinks that, with more experience, the midfield will grow even stronger because none of its players have reached their prime yet.
He explained what separates Juventus' strength in the middle as opposed to teams like Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
"Our midfield is very young and it's not only about [playing pretty] football. We want when we lose the ball, we are very strong without it also," Asamoah said.
He also thinks the additions of forwards Tevez and Llorente will add another dimension to the team.
"These two players are very good and well experienced and we're very happy to have them on our team now," Asamoah said. "They are going to help us do well in the league and also in the Champions League."
Asamoah and Juventus are in San Francisco preparing for their first match of the Guinness International Champions Cup against English Premier League side Everton. He hopes this event will show where the team has improved ahead of the Serie A season.
Though it is a preseason tournament, Juve already has a tough test ahead aagainst Everton at the city's baseball stadium, AT&T Park. Asamoah hopes that Juventus can do well in the tournament as he believes it's a good test of the club's Champions League ambitions. If Juventus beats Everton, the club will be drawn against one of several high-profile sides including Real Madrid, Chelsea and Inter.
"Some great champions from tough leagues are coming to play so it will show us where we have to be," Asamoah said. "Playing against teams like this is very good because it will show you a lot of things, what you have to do [to improve].
"So it's good thing for us right before the season."
