AC Milan
After last season’s Champions League campaign where the Rossoneri crashed out of the competition in humiliating fashion, after a 4-0 loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford, the Italian outfit hopes to return to their winning ways in the competition with help of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho. The Diavoli have been inserted in Group G with Auxerre, Real Madrid and Ajax.
STRENGTH & WEAKNESSES
Milan are known for their winning mentality in Europe. In spite of bad performances recently in Italy, the Rossoneri seems to play at a higher level in the Champions League. New coach Massimiliano Allegri wants Milan wants to play offensive football, and they should be able to do just that with Ibrahimovic, Pato, Robinho and Ronaldinho up front.
The defence is the side’s big problem. Marek Jankulovski and Gianluca Zambrotta are past their primes while Luca Antonini, Giancarlo Abate, and probably Papastathopoulos don't have the pedigree to shine in Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
STARS & KEY PLAYERS
There are so many stars in this squad. Ibrahimovic and Robinho join Ronaldinho, Pato, Clarence Seedorf, Nesta and Thiago Silva. The ex-Barcelona man will allow Allegri to play with a real first striker. Robinho will represent a big alternative to Dinho or Alexandre Pato. Their fantasy and capacity of scoring is fantastic. But Milan’s key player without doubt is Andrea Pirlo. He is a clever midfielder, probably the most clever in the world. His ability to hold the ball in crucial moments of the game and his abiltiy to provide assists to the strikers are fundamental for the Rossoneri.
COACH & TACTICAL
Milan has a tradition of playing attacking football. Allegri will play with 4-3-3 or with 4-3-1-2 but it’s also possible that the Milan coach will draw up together Ronaldinho, Pato, Ibrahimovic and Robinho.
SUCCESSES
Milan have won the Champions League seven times and sit behind only Real Madrid (nine titles) in that regard. Their last title was won in Athens in 2007 against Liverpool. They also lifted the trophy in 1963, 1969, 1989, 1990, 1994 & 2003.
STADIUM
The San Siro is like a fortress and holds nearly 90,000 people. The absence of an athletic track around the pitch allows spectators to have a good view of the action.
HERO OF THE FANS
Captain Massimo Ambrosini. holds a place in the heart of Milan fans but the real hero is Filippo Inzaghi. Every match Milan fans sing: "Ohi Ohi Ohi Pippo Inzaghi segna per noi,” even when Pippo is not on the field.
GOAL.COM PREDICTION
Group G is probably the most difficult in the competition, especially with the presence of Real Madrid. Auxerre and Ajax are no pushovers either so Milan have to play well if they want to qualify for the next phase. If they succeed in doing that, then they have a chance of winning their eighth title.
