Club History
Until Aidy Boothroyd and Gareth Southgate became mangers of Premiership clubs in Summer 2006, Chris Coleman of Fulham had been lumbered with the tiresome epithet "youngest manager in the Premier League." But the plain-speaking Welshman, whose own playing career was brutally cut short by a horrific car accident, has won many admirers for the way he has kept Fulham in the Premiership on limited resources, playing attractive football and coping with the defections of stars like Louis Saha, Sean Davis and Steed Malbranque to more glamorous clubs. Coleman appears to have successfully addressed his side's chief weakness - lack of resilience away from Craven Cottage - with the result that so far this season they are looking harder to break down and generally more comfortable in the top flight. Although they are owned by Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed, they live in the shadow of fabulously wealthy Chelsea but inhabit a rather different planet financially. Yet they continue to acquit themselves favourably, Coleman maintaining the progress achieved by Frenchman Jean Tigana who guided them into the Premiership in 2001. That was a first taste of top-flight football since 1968 for a club founded in 1879 by churchgoers who named their team Fulham St Andrew's Church Sunday School FC. Having adopted the snappier title of Fulham in 1888, the club turned professional in 1898, two years after moving to Craven Cottage beside the River Thames - their eleventh and (to date) final home. Fulham were elected to Division Two of the Football League in 1907 but didn't reach the old First Division until 1949. Their longest spell in the top flight was the nine seasons from 1959 until 1968; but having made a sound start to their sixth consecutive season as a Premiership club, Fulham could be on their way towards setting a new club benchmark.
