49. Andrea Barzagli
The 31-year-old defender returned to Italy in January 2011 to join Juventus after spending two and a half seasons playing for Wolfsburg. Andrea Barzagli slotted straight into the Juve defence and performed superbly throughout 2011-12 as the Old Lady went the whole Serie A season unbeaten to win the Scudetto ahead of title rivals rivals AC Milan. The Italy international was integral to Juve's success, with the foundation of their dominance their miserly defence. They conceded the least goals in Serie A over the course of the season, which was also statistically the second best of any side in Europe's top six leagues, bettered only by Porto. Barzagli added a Coppa Italia runners-up medal to his collection in May, before recovering from a calf strain in June to play a key part for his national side as they were runners-up to Spain at Euro 2012.
Moment of the Season - Scored his first league goal for Juventus in their final league game against Atalanta to ensure the club concluded the Serie A season unbeaten.

Editor's view - "For me he was the top defender in Serie A last season and his role in helping Juventus remain unbeaten for the duration of their season fully justifies his inclusion in the list. Also performed admirably for Italy at the Euros after his early injury scare." - Vittorio Campanile - Chief Editor of Goal.com Italy
