The inaugural Afcon in 1957
Nowadays, it's hard to imagine a time before Afcon, but prior to 1957, there had never been a tournament. That year, Sudan played host to the first edition of the competition, but only the founding nations of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) - the hosts, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Africa - were eligible.
Four teams were reduced to three when the governing body disqualified the South Africans due to their discrimination against black players. The Pharaohs eventually won the tournament, beating Ethiopia in the final to claim the first of their seven titles.
