In 2008, he jumped to Spain and joined Villarreal, where he eventually became an important part of the team. Nevertheless, 2009 brought bad news for him, as he became transfer listed.  

He found the minutes he was lacking back in Sweden, with AIK.  

In May 2008, Eguren was back in the national team, five years after his last call-up. Tabarez rescued him and the defensive midfielder played several matches during the World Cup qualifiers, fighting for a place in the starting XI with Gargano and Perez.
