In a Swiss national team full of young talent Alexander Frei is the experienced veteran and captain upfront. The 30-year-old striker of FC Basel has made his mark in the French Ligue 1 and in the German Bundesliga before returning to his home country last summer.

Frei is a proven goalscorer, clinching the top scorer's title in France for Stade Rennes and finding the net regularly for Borussia Dortmund. He is a classic central striker, a strong finisher in the box with powerful and well-placed shots. Frei tends to wait for the ball instead of chasing opponents – a characteristic that led to problems with Dortmund coach Juergen Klopp who preferred defensive-minded, running strikers in his team. He is known for taking dangerous, curling free-kicks.

Frei is somewhat of a controversial figure in Switzerland. His feuds with team-mates and managers are well-documented. The striker does not try remain silent but voices and shows his discontent when he is placed on the bench. In the Swiss national team, though, he doesn’t have to be afraid of losing his starting role. As the captain and leader of the squad he is a regular, playing alongside younger offensive players such as Albert Bunjaku, Tranquillo Barnetta or Eren Derdiyok.

Frei is loved as a hometown hero by the Basel supporters. In the past, the high hopes of the Swiss nation were linked to the performances of the striker but in the end, Switzerland was disappointed twice. Euro 2004 was no success for the 'Nati'  and highlighted by an Frei-incident in the game against England, when he apparently spat in the direction of Steven Gerrard and was banned for the rest of the tournament.

Four years later, Frei sustained a serious knee injury in the first half of the first group match against the Czech Republic and watched on crutches from the sideline, as his side crashed out of the tournament in Switzerland and Austria after the group stage.
In the build-up to this year’s World Cup in South Africa, Frei was injured again in February, when he broke his arm in a match against Aarau. He is expected to recover in time for the main event of the year.
