Xabi Alonso

A linchpin for every team he as played for, Xabi Alonso is a gem of a midfield talent. Having come up through Basque side Real Sociedad, the Spaniard was prised by Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez. Going on to perform such heroics as the Reds’ third goal in their epic Champions League final comeback against AC Milan, Alonso’s departure for Real Madrid last summer had a profoundly disastrous effect on Liverpool.
His play is characterised by deft touches to retain possession, brilliant delivery on set plays, booming shots, and audacious attempts at goal from the centre circle.
With La Roja, he was overshadowed by a brilliant Marcos Senna in Euro 2008. But with Vicente del Bosque’s arrival, Xabi has seen more time in the Spanish starting line-up and could become the team’s orchestrator in the defensive midfield come South Africa 2010

Xabi Alonso is a close childhood friend of Mikel Arteta. They were neighbours in their youth and competed against each other constantly as youngsters. Years later, they would face each other in a Premier League classic between Liverpool and Everton.
