Xavi Hernandez - Barcelona
The Barcelona midfielder is perhaps the most integral player for his club and is fundamental to his country’s hopes of winning World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
His characteristics have made him an undisputed mainstay with both Pep Guardiola and Vicente Del Bosque.

Xavi made his debut in the Primera Division on August 18, 1998 under then-Barca-coach Louis Van Gaal in the Spanish Supercup against Mallorca. In that very match, the Blaugrana youth product scored a goal, foreshadowing the brilliance that was to come.

Xavi began to grow into his midfield role as the successor to then-Barca captain (and current coach) Pep Guardiola. Some challenged his ability to do so, faulting his small stature. But it was precisely this diminutive profile that enabled him to dart around and evade defenders.

Two years after his Liga debut in 2000, Xavi featured as a Spanish international in a 2-1 defeat against the Netherlands. Since, the Catalan has been a fixture in his country’s midfield, becoming a leader in both Luis Aragones’ side and Vicente del Bosque’s squad.

After a sublime performance in Euro 2008 for which he was named Player of the Tournament, many anticipate Xavi to be one of Spain’s best performances in the World Cup, possibly directing them to the title.
