Javi Martinez is a midfielder currently playing at Athletic Bilbao in Spain's Primera Liga.

The Basque club signed him as a raw 17-year old for €6 million in the summer of 2006, from Osasuna, despite Martinez never having played a first team game.

The midfielder soon became a regular in the side during his debut season, the highlight of which consisted of scoring twice against Deportivo de La Coruña, in a December 16, 2006 2–0 away win.

Martinez finished his first Liga campaign with 35 matches and three goals, and again continued to improve in subsequent years, helping Athletic Bilbao progress to the 2009 Copa del Rey final.

Last summer, Martínez was the subject of transfer speculation linking him to Liverpool FC, as a replacement for Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso, but rumors eventually blew over. In the following season with Athletic, the midfielder scored a career-best six times in the league campaign, as Athletic narrowly missed on another UEFA Europa League qualification. This summer he has once again been linked with transfer talk, this time to partner Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid.

On May 20, 2010, Martinez was named in the senior Spanish squad's list of 23 for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, by manager Vicente del Bosque. He made his debut for the team on May 29th.
