Steven ‘Schillo’ Pienaar is a player whose immense talent and ability to help South Africa tick makes him a household name in the host nation. Schillo honed his football skills at Johannesburg's School of Excellence before joining Ajax Cape Town, a feeder club of the Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam.

Possibly the country's best player at the moment, Schillo makes a huge difference to the performance of the team, and his absence is always felt when suspended or injured. He is one of the few European based players for Bafana who command a regular spot at club level with Premier League side Everton. His passing and vision in midfield creates a number of attacking opportunities for the strikers.

He made his international debut for South Africa in 2002 when Bafana Bafana routed Turkey 2-0 and has since accumulated more than 40 caps. Working together with his accomplice in midfield Teko Modise, they have shown their ability to dismantle the opposition through their combination of skill and creativity.

Pienaar was part of the Bafana Bafana squad that travelled to the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan, South Africa's last appearance at the finals. The creative midfielder has reinvented himself since joining English Premier League high-flyers Everton, to such an extent that he is now considered by many to be a genuine South African football great.

Pienaar joined England club Everton F.C. on loan in 2007-08 and later signed a 3-year contract from Dortmund for a pre-agreed fee of £2 million after payment of an initial loan fee of £350,000. Bayern Munich are said to watching his progress closely and already see him as the replacement for Frank Ribery who has been linked to a multi-million euro move to Real Madrid.

Did you know?

Pienaar was voted man of the match in the 2009 Confederations Cup game against Brazil, but South Africa lost 1-0. There is argument currently going on amongst South Africans regarding who should don the number 10 jersey between Steven Pienaar and Teko Modise.
