Sangweni is a strong, explosive, hard tackling and versatile central defender whose excellent aerial ability and knack for scoring in open play and set plays was something national team selectors could not ignore. After being a passenger in the South African team for a while, Sangweni has grabbed the opportunity afforded to him with both hands.
Although both coach Carlos Alberto Parreira and his predecessor, Joel Santana, selected Sangweni for the team, neither of them wanted to tamper with their back four, which meant that Sangweni’s only contribution was minimal, with only a few appearances from the bench. Since then however, the towering Golden Arrows defender has put together some solid performances in Bafana Bafana colours, most importantly as one of the star performers during the four-week training camp the team had in Brazil earlier this year.
He was also impressive in the build-up friendly matches in Germany. The 28-year-old defender was born in Empangeni, outside Durban in KwaZulu-Natal, and he made his international debut in 2007 against Mauritius.Did you Know: Sangweni is nicknamed "Nsimbi", which is a Zulu term for an iron rod.
